On Dec.7, 1979, John Deppas embarked on his 40-year journey in the world of hairdressing.

Deppas received his cosmetology training right here in Jamestown, his hometown, at the former Raphael Beauty School that once stood conveniently on West Third Street.

After graduation, it didn’t take long for John David Salon to become a reality. In 1982, Deppas opened John David Hair Design at what was then 308 W. Second St.

In order to make room for construction of the Northwest Arena, the grand, multi-purpose facility, his building was demolished and so in 2000, he relocated his business to its current location: the historic Victorian home that prominently occupies the corner of Sixth and Pine streets. There, he operates a two-story, full-service salon employing nine cosmetologists.

When asked what is the secret to the longevity of his years in business, Deppas talks about the importance of dedicating time to your workmanship, finding mentors and holding yourself to a standard of excellence. Deppas said building a team you can depend on is crucial. He said, “Success does not come individually,” and praises his staff and the community for their support.

When it comes to client relations, his advice is to stay open minded and always be ready to suggest something new and exciting when the opportunity strikes. He said, “Don’t be afraid to pick up a new tool, or suggest a game-changing haircut for your client.”

Deppas said one of the biggest joys of his career after four decades of experience is sharing his knowledge and mentoring other hairstylists.

“I love it when a co-worker asks for my opinion or includes me in a consultation with a client,” he said. “I love to watch transformation happen, not only in the client, but also within the hairstylist.”

What does the future hold for John David Salon? According to Deppas, business will continue to thrive in the beautiful city of Jamestown. He adds that founding a cosmetology training institution, perhaps of advanced learning for hairdressers, would also be a “dream come true.”
