LAKEWOOD — For those looking to keep their New Year’s resolution and finally get into shape, consider joining The Fitness Bunker, Chautauqua County’s newest 24-hour gym.

Located at 9 W. Summit Ave. in Lakewood, The Fitness Bunker offers a smart, one-of-a-kind experience for its members, a blend of cardio and weight equipment, fitness classes and nutritional food and drinks — all under one roof.

Co-owner Salvatore Rachuna, a CrossFit-certified trainer, said his goal for the gym is simple: give clients the best workout experience of their lives.

Having grown up in Chautauqua County — and previously owned a CrossFit gym in Erie, Pa. — Rachuna said he felt the area was sorely lacking a non-chain gym that brought the essence of CrossFit and high intensity interval training, also known as HIIT, to its members.

”There’s really no one in the area who’s doing anything like this,” Rachuna said. ”Since we’re the only locally-owned and operated non-chain gym, we’re tied more into the community than the big chain gyms in town. So we’re going to have a lot more of a vested interest in our clients. They’re not just a number.”

Rachuna said the gym will have a full cardio section, complete with treadmills, ellipticals, Airdyne bikes, skiers and water rowers. Weights will include dumbbells up to 110 pounds, bumper plates and a rig.

In addition to a HIIT bootcamp, classes will include hot yoga, dance and a so-called ”Workout of the Day,” which includes an Olympic-style lift followed by a high-intenstiy interval workout.

One-on-one personal training and a shower facility are available.

According to co-owner Laurie Shults, members of The Fitness Bunker can show their 24-hour pass to local businesses and get discounted rates on purchases associated with the gym — further emphasizing its community ties.

”The local diner here has a healthy breakfast called ‘The Bunker Breakfast,”’ Shults said. ”This is what sets us apart from other gyms and it’s really fun to see.”

”Lakewood Nutrition also moved in and sub-leased space from us,” Rachuna said ”So you can work out and get a protein shake right away to help in your post-workout recovery.”

The Fitness Bunker is scheduled to open in mid-January, but the public is free to sign up anytime by visiting the gym or its Facebook page at facebook.com/thefitnessbunker.
