Lind Funeral Home Owner Reflects On 75 Years In Jamestown
The Lind Funeral Home has offered support and services to area residents in the midst of difficult times for 75 years.
The funeral home has helped provide a level of comfort and compassion under the Lind family since 1941.
President Gary Kindberg said the home was started by his grandparents, Bernhard and Dorothy Lind, in their home at 254 S. Main St. He said the business has changed over the past 75 years in the sense of moving forward, but has not wavered from the dedication to service and grace upon which it was founded.
”Our physical building has been added onto four times, and the business has changed. When my grandfather started they used to have visiting hours in the homes, but we don’t do that anymore,” Kindberg said. ”Now many folks are prearranging and getting their wishes written down. There is biographic information and questions we might ask that children won’t know, so it’s nice to have those things written down, so pre-arranging has become more of a part of our day.”
Kindberg said the current location was built in 1957 at 805 W. Third St. and is one of the few businesses in Jamestown that have remained family-owned and operated for three generations. Bernhard and Dorothy Lind continued to serve the community into the 70s, he said.
The couple had six children, including three boys and three girls, and the three boys took over operation of the business. Kindberg said the three Lind family men ran the business until 2000. As for himself, Kindberg has been in the family business since 1988. Third generation family members who have joined the business include Cynthia Lind Hanson and Robin Lind Bonfiglio.
The Lind Funeral Home, under the care of the Lind family, has been a trusted part of a delicate process over several decades for many reasons, but the most important is the level of concern and compassion offered there, Kindberg said.
”People take a good deal of comfort because they recognize the name, and maybe have had an experience with previous services. No one wants to go see the funeral director, but maybe if they can just go see Gary who they’ve known forever, it makes a difference,” he said. ”You can visibly see the relief when it’s someone they know. We meet people on what can be their worst day, but we hope we can make that as easy as possible.”
Kindberg said the third-generation of the Lind family is proud to continue offering services to the community with honor, respect and dignity in the same way their grandparents did in 1941.
“We were given a gift of the business in terms of what our grandparents started, and we hope we honor their memory,” he said.
Kindberg said the thing he treasures most about his role in the business is knowing he can help and support community members during difficult times.
”It’s very rewarding that we can help folks when they don’t know where to turn,” he said.
