Lakewood Save-A-Lot Opens
LAKEWOOD – Save-A-Lot in Lakewood has opened its doors.
Originally aiming for a May opening before moving it back to July, Save-A-Lot finally opened to the public Wednesday at 8 a.m. During grand-opening ceremonies, the first 100 customers through the door received a bag of groceries.
“We are running some really good specials that are available at both stores, actually,” said Dave Waller, owner, in reference to the separate Save-A-Lot on Fluvanna Avenue in Jamestown. The sale will go through Saturday and will feature a head of lettuce, a 5-pound bag of potatoes, and a pound of sirloin pork chops all for 99 cents each.
Since the closure of Quality Markets on Fairmount Avenue, Lakewood hadn’t had a stand-alone grocery store chain within village limits until the opening of Save-A-Lot.
“Numerous people – myself included – have been asking for us to bring a stand-alone grocery store (to Lakewood),” said David Wordelmann, Lakewood mayor.
The 17,000-square-foot building is the former site of the Super Duper, which has been closed for the past 20 years.
“I lived in Ashville, and I used to drive by (the old Super Duper) every day and thought it would make a good Save-A-Lot,” Waller said. “(Save-A-Lot) did so well over in Jamestown, I thought it would do well in Lakewood as well.”
There are more than 1,300 Save-A-Lot stores nationwide. However, Waller told The Post-Journal that these stores are locally owned and operated.
According to the grocery chain’s website, the store offers discount groceries up to 40 percent off of retail prices, compared to conventional grocery stores.
The Lakewood Save-A-Lot is located at 169 Fairmount Ave. in Lakewood. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 763-0095.
