Job Corps

To Host Tour

CASSADAGA – The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus, located at 8115 Glasgow Road, Cassadaga, on Thursday beginning at 10 a.m. The Cassadaga Job Corps provides training to begin a career in the health care and construction industries as well as High School Equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma. Training in certified nurse’s aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical are available as well as the advanced training for licensed practical nursing. The academy will accept young adults, age 16-24, that are committed to a rigorous education and training program. Applicants can apply for on-center living or off-center living, and all applicants will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted. Myers Taking Part In Event

FREWSBURG – The Myers Memorial Library will participate in Take Your Child to the Library Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. The library staff has groundhog-related activities and snacks planned for the morning since Sunday is Groundhog Day. YMCA Offers Baby-Sitting Clinic

The Jamestown YMCA will be holding a baby-sitting clinic for boys and girls, ages 11-16. The clinic will be held Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Jamestown YMCA. The clinic will instruct participants about the responsibilities involved in caring for younger children including child development, safety, emergency response and more. The clinic is taught by experienced instructors who have knowledge in child development, health and overall care of children. Participants should bring a brown bag lunch. Space is limited. WCA To Sponsor Jewelry Sale

The WCA Hospital Auxiliary will sponsor a Park Lane Jewelry sale on Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Main Lobby of WCA Hospital, located at 207 Foote Ave., Jamestown. Salamanca Board To Meet

Urban Poultry Roundtable Set

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County will host two outstanding 4-H Poultry Project members who will be discussing the requirements for keeping chickens in an urban setting. The meeting will be held Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the Frank W. Bratt Agricultural Center, 3542 Turner Road, Jamestown. Valentine’s Day Event Planned

SOUTH DAYTON – A Valentine’s Day Celebration, benefiting the new community park and playground project, will be held on Feb. 8. Charlie and Debbie’s Country Store in South Dayton will host a breakfast special; Zollinger’s Restaurant, a lunch special of beef on weck and potato salad and Capozzi’s Too, will take 10 percent off lunch for two. The South Dayton Firebells will hold a spaghetti dinner and movie from 3-6 p.m. in the firehall which will be decorated by Melinda Frederickson. Children will be able to make Valentine crafts in the South Dayton Library from 10 a.m. to noon. Tickets for a drawing, benefiting the project, will be available from The South Dayton Community Organization. Library Meeting Is Tonight

Fenton Business Meeting Is Feb. 5

The annual business meeting of the Fenton History Center will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Fenton Mansion, 67 Washington St., Jamestown. Swim Classes

To Begin Feb. 3

The Winfred Crawford Dibert Boys & Girls Club of Jamestown is currently registering participants for Infant-Toddler Swim classes. Classes are for children 6 months to 5 years of age. The next eight-week session begins on Monday, Feb. 3, and will run Mondays through March 31. There will be no classes during spring break (Feb. 17). The cost for the Infant Toddler Swim class is $25 for the first child and $20 for each additional child. The program is designed for children under 5 and they must have an adult swim with them. Pet Loss Group To Meet Feb. 4

The Chautauqua County Humane Society sponsored Pet Loss Bereavement Group meets Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the James Prendergast Library, 509 Cherry St., Jamestown, in the second floor conference room. Losing a pet hurts. Area residents are encouraged to come share their grief and provide support to others who are coping with the death of their pets. Hootenanny To Be Held Feb. 7

Infinity Visual & Performing Arts Cafe will be the site of a 1960s-style hootenanny on Friday, Feb. 7, from 7-8:30 p.m., hosted by the popular local folk music duo, Doc & Bill. Evolution Film

To Air Thursday

Veritas First will present “Evolution vs. God,” a video of students and professors on secular university campuses struggling to answer questions on why they believe evolution is true. Veritas First is a local apologetics group defending the truth of scripture from Genesis to Revelation.

Set For Feb. 1

BEMUS POINT – Winterfest to benefit the snowmobile clubs of Chautauqua County will be held Saturday, Feb. 1 from noon-7 p.m. at Bemus Point Golf Course, 72 Main St., Bemus Point. Activities featured will be a groomed demo snowmobile course, groomer rides by the Ellery Sno-Cruisers, a vintage snowmobile show, drink and food specials, cross-country skiing, cornhole, sledding and a 50/50 drawing. Choir Reunion Set For Today

CHAUTAUQUA – The Chautauqua Seasonal Sunday Choir and the daily Motet Choir will meet for a reunion beginning today through Sunday at Chautauqua Institution. 4-H Dog Program To Meet Tuesday

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s 4-H Youth Development Program is working to unfold another year of youth programming. The 4-H dog program accepts members ages 8-19 who have an interest in dogs or have dogs they are interested in learning how to train. The 4-H dog program offers training and dog showing experience. The program hosts several shows at 4-H Acres in Stockton. These shows allow youth to demonstrate their hard work and pets’ skills. The 4-H dog program accepts new member from Oct. 1 to April 1 and encourages anyone with an interest to join them at their next educational class on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Frank Bratt Agricultural Center in Jamestown. Town Looking Into Delivery Problem

CARROLL – The Town of Carroll Clerk’s Office has received numerous phone calls from residents that have not received their town and county tax bills. The tax bills were mailed Jan. 9. There seems to be an issue with the delivery of mail in the Frewsburg (14738) area. The town clerk has been in contact with the Frewsburg post office, as well as the USPS customer service investigative office, and this issue is being investigated. If you have not received your town and county tax bill from the town of Carroll, call the clerk’s office as soon as possible at 568-5365.

Training Series Planned At JCC

Jamestown Community College’s Jamestown Campus will offer a noncredit supervisory training series on Fridays, Feb. 7 through April 11. Sessions, led by experienced supervisors from various employment sectors, examine timely topics for current, new and prospective supervisors. Classes meet from 1-3 p.m. Time and stress management, employee motivation and performance, legal aspects of supervision, communication skills, and problem solving and decision making are among the topics that will be explored. Jamestown Native Moves Up

Enterprise Rent-A-Car announced the promotion of Tom Mazzurco of Jamestown as the area rental manager for the southtowns and Southern Tier of Western New York. He is responsible for supervising facilities and staff for all locations in Hamburg, Orchard Park, Fredonia, Jamestown and Olean. Mazzurco is a graduate of SUNY Fredonia.

Board Chairman To Retire April 1

WILLIAMSVILLE – National Fuel Gas Company recently announced that David F. Smith, executive chairman of the board, has indicated his intention to retire, effective April 1. Smith will continue to serve as chairman of the board of directors.

CCB Promotes Dunkirk Woman

LITTLE VALLEY – Salvatore Marranca, president and CEO of Cattaraugus County Bank, recently announced the promotion of Kelly Cave – former assistant manager – to assistant vice president and Dunkirk branch manager. Cave has been with CCB’s Dunkirk office since the independent, community bank purchased that location from the former Greater Buffalo Savings Bank in 2008.

Got Talent?

Audition Tuesday

Big Time Productions and The Post-Journal, in conjunction with 59lucylane.com and Wing City Grille, present the fifth annual Chautauqua’s Got Talent. Auditions for the countywide talent competition are set to be held at Wing City Grille in Lakewood on Tuesday and at Wing City Grille in Fredonia on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Registration starts at 5 p.m., and auditions begin at 7 p.m. Auditioning hopefuls are to be prepared to offer a sample of their talent for approximately 1 minute, and bring a parent or guardian if they’re under 18. This contest welcomes singers, dancers, magicians, comedians and other performers of all ages to compete for at least $500 cash, a promotional website and dinner once a month for a year at Wing City Grille. This contest will have a judges’ panel that will offer constructive criticism, but the audience will decide the winner. The competition will be held at The Spire Theater, 317 E. Jamestown Community College’s Total Fitness program and Faculty Student Association are offering fitness classes this winter and spring. Sessions begin the week of Jan. 17 and run in six-week sessions ending May 17. Classes are conducted in the Physical Education Complex. Pre-registration is required and can be done by calling JCC Total Fitness at 338-1260. The cost is $4 a class, $20 for six prepaid classes, or $40 for 12 prepaid classes for Total Fitness members. YMCA Adds

Marketing Director

Karen Schiavone has recently joined the Jamestown Area YMCA as membership and marketing director.

Schiavone comes to the Y with almost 10 years of experience in marketing, media relations and publishing. Most recently, she managed social media for Chautauqua Institution. Schiavone previously served as marketing director for O’Connell & Aronowitz P.C. of Albany. While in Albany, she was a member of the Junior League of Albany and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center Junior Committee.

Schiavone said she is thrilled to have the opportunity to make a personal impact on Jamestown and its surrounding communities as membership and marketing director.

“Nothing is more meaningful than working together to strengthen your own community,” Schiavone said. “With so many charitable organizations hard at work here in Jamestown, I want to make sure we are taking every opportunity offered to enrich the lives of those around us.”

Between gymnastics and swimming, Schiavone spent much of her childhood at the Jamestown and Lakewood YMCAs and Camp Onyahsa. It was that time spent that made her aware of how profoundly important the Y’s programs are to the local community.

“We are very excited to have Karen on board,” said Mark Eckendorf, YMCA executive director. “We had over 130 applicants, and she brings a wealth of experience. We are looking forward to great things.”

Schiavone received her juris doctor from Albany Law School magna cum laude and also holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from Grove City College. She lives in Jamestown and is a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

The Jamestown Area YMCA is a United Way agency.

Snow and ice create a challenge for mail carriers as they attempt to safely deliver to Western New York homes and businesses. The U.S. Postal Service is once again asking customers for their assistance by clearing snow and ice from walkways, driveways, porches and areas around the mailbox. “Slips, trips and falls continue to be the most frequent type of injury sustained by our carriers,” said Julieann Morgan, Western New York district safety manager. “And as winter conditions worsen, so do the number of accidents. By simply clearing the way, customers help reduce the risk.”

Tree Pickup

Set For Monday

The Jamestown Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department will begin its annual pick-up of Christmas trees for recycling on Monday, weather permitting. City residents are asked to place their tree on the terrace between the street and sidewalk and, if possible, to keep the trees visible if a large snowfall occurs.
