Genealogical Society meets Oct. 21

Change of venue for the Oct. 21 meeting of the Chautauqua County Genealogical Society. The meeting will be held at Darwin. R. Barker Museum 7 Day St., Fredonia. The business meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Steele Room. At 7 p.m. Max Walters, Curator of the Museum, will speak on the "Founding of the Fredonia Academy." According to Walters, Fredonia had some form of higher education since 1826, when the Fredonia Academy opened to an original cohort of just 15 students. Within one year, the Academy had 136 students -- 81 boys and 55 girls. Students were required to have a strong basis in reading and writing, and to refrain from profane behavior. The Academy would be "reborn" as the Fredonia Normal School, 1867. Walters will discuss his research on the history of the Fredonia Academy, Normal School and SUNY Fredonia during a lecture and tour of the new exhibit in the museum, "Normal, Not Average": The Extraordinary History of Fredonia's Higher Education. The public is invited to attend the event. For additional information contact Gail Dash at 716-785-8420
