Bemus Point Historical Society To Host Speaker Tonight

BEMUS POINT – The Bemus Point Historical Society Guest Speaker Series continues today, Sept. 9, as Scott Lewellen tells the story of Clarence Rhebergen of Clymer. Rhebergen was the first child born in America to Dutch immigrants in the late 19th century, his parents having emigrated with an atypical motivation to leave the Netherlands. Growing up a farm boy, Rhebergen was drafted into the United States Army as the country was finally pulled into World War I. The talk will focus on his participation in France during this conflict. His involvement was as a wagoner, that is, a hauler of provisions - food, water, medical, ammunition, and other needed supplies - to and from the front lines using animal power - often at night to avoid targeting from the enemy. Rhebergen's newly discovered diary from his year there has given a clear personal insight to the actions, satisfactions and horrors of that time and experience. Some of these writings will be shared as his story is told. The meeting is open to the public and will be held at the Bemus Point Village Hall on Alburtus Avenue beginning at 7 p.m. There will be a brief historical society update followed by the presentation. The adjacent Bemus Point Historical Society Museum will be open at 6:30 p.m. for touring. For more information follow The Bemus Point Historical Society on Facebook.
