JLDC Cancels Wednesday Meeting

Due to a lack of agenda items, the monthly meeting of the Jamestown Local Development Corporation scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 19, will be canceled. Women On Fire For Christ Conference Is Aug. 22

SINCLAIRVILLE - The Women on Fire For Christ 2026 retreat from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Park Methodist Church, 49 Sinclair Drive, SInclairville. Registration will take place from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. The retreat features Yvonne Conte, an author, comedian and motivational speaker. The cost is $40, which includes lunch. Bemus Point Library To Host Local Author Thursday

BEMUS POINT – Bemus Point Library will host local author Martin Haumesser for a discussion of his recently published, non-fiction books, Tailwinds and Ott's River, on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 6 p.m. Tailwinds tells the story of the author's parents who exchanged hundreds of letters during World War II while his father was stationed in Italy as a radio operator/gunner on a B-17 flying bombing runs over German targets. Ott's River offers the life story of the

author's father-in-law, also a World War II veteran and a paratrooper in the Pacific Theater, fighting in some of the most horrific battles in the Philippines. The author will discuss both books and the themes that tie them together, including the American ideals for which his father and father-in-law fought during the war. He will also talk about the publishing process and how he worked with a publisher in Buffalo to make the books a reality.

Historic Walking Tour Of Jamestown's Hidden Alleys Is Saturday, Aug. 22

The Fenton History Center's upcoming tour on Saturday,Aug. 22, at 10 a.m. is about Jamestown's Hidden Alleys. Tucked away from view behind respectable facades, alleys were indispensable elements in American cities during the last half of the nineteenth century. The "impolite" realities of the industrial movement were hidden from Victorian society. Jamestown had five alleys , and those attending the walking tour will learn their stories. Participants will meet at the Fenton History Center at 10 a.m. The tour is led by Fenton volunteer Cindy Dustin.

The cost is $8 for members and $12 for non-members. Participants can pre-register online, in person at the Fenton, or by phone at 716-664-6256. There is a limit of 20 people for each tour. Sponsors are Rodgers Land Surveying, Ahlstrom Schaeffer, and Weber Knapp. The last tour of the summer is Saturday, Aug. 29 in Lake View Cemetery at the corner of Buffalo Street and Lakeview Avenue titled the Ladies of Lake View Cemetery led by Fenton Trustee Janet Wahlberg and Jamestown City Historian Mike Rohlin.
