Sinclairville Library To Host Memorial Poetry Reading July 20
SINCLAIRVILLE – The Sinclairville Free Library plans a poetry reading in memory of poet and teacher John Brantingham, who taught and published widely in the world, but locally at Chautauqua and Jamestown Community College and also gave classes at the library. This will be a time to share original poetry and/or readings from Brantingham’s work. The reading will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 20, for a time to honor Brantingham and the inspiration that he gave those who attended his readings. North Harmony Seniors To Meet July 20
STOW – The North Harmony Seniors’ June 15 dinner meeting drew a record attendance of 45 people. The Hospitality Committee of Becky Blum, Barb Cheney, Phyllis Huling, Helen Johnson, Barb Price and Laurie and Jim Waid oversaw the potluck buffet and June birthdays of Becky Deault, Sue Harper and Barb Price, who were honored with a birthday cake prepared by Becky Blum. The guest speaker was Bob Johnston, who used projected photos and narration to tell of “Trolley Car #93″s restoration. It was out of service from 1938 until 1996 when Johnston and friends began 39 years of work on it. Johnston’s photos of numerous historic sites and buildings in Jamestown elicited memories and comments from club members. Winners of the 50/50 raffle were Marty LaFredo and Tom Newton. The next potluck dinner meeting will be July 20 at 5 p.m. in the clubhouse at 5377 Stow Road. It is open to seniors ages 50 and over with no residency restriction.
Vegetarian Society To Hold Summer Meeting July 19
MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua Vegetarian Society’s summer meeting will be held at Lakeside Park in Mayville at the pavilion from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 19. The society will provide vegan hot dogs, buns, condiments and a green salad. Those attending should bring a vegan picnic dish to share. Those attending can also bring lawn games to play on the grass or card games to play in the pavilion. The group will not be making tea, so those attending should bring their own beverage. Reservations are appreciated so enough vegan hot dogs are purchased, and organizers also need to know if gluten free buns are needed. The cost is $2 for those bringing a dish to share and $6 without a dish. Call Gail at 716-753-7761 for reservations by July 16.
Reg Lenna To Show Film July 17
Chiwetel Ejioifor and Renate Reinsve star in Kane Parson’s Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition showing Friday, July 17, at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts. In the psychological horror film, a strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom. This showing of the movie features 16 minutes of post-credit bonus footage. Backrooms is rated R and is 126 minutes long. Upcoming Movies at The Reg include Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas in the musical comedy drama Power Ballad (July 22 at 7 p.m.), the Australian romantic supernatural film Leviticus (July 24 at 7 p.m.), Hayley Kiyoko’s film adaptation of her book, Girls Like Girls (July 29 at 7 p.m.) and Steven Spielberg’s science fiction thriller Disclosure Day (July 31 at 7 p.m. Tickets for most Movies at The Reg are $8 in-person at the box office and $10 online (reglenna.com) and by phone at 716-484-7070. Hazeltine Library To Host Author July 20
BUSTI – Deb Pines, a New York Times award-winning headline writer and author of 12 Chautauqua-based murder mysteries, will return to the Hazeltine Public Library on Monday, July 20. “We’re delighted to welcome Deb back to HPL,” said Katie Smith, library director. “She will be talking about her Chautauqua series and introducing her latest mystery – Tossing Seas. This one will take people onboard the Chautauqua Belle steamboat to solve the mystery.” The event begins at 6 p.m. in the library’s community building and is free and open to everyone.
