Historian To Discuss Annie Oakley Visit

RIPLEY – On Tuesday, March 17, at 6 p.m., the Ripley Public Library, 64 W. Main St., Ripley, will host the third in a series of local history lectures. The lecture is free and open to the public. Speaking will be Michelle Henry, research historian, who will present a program on Annie Oakley’s connection to Chautauqua County. Annie Oakley was best known for her remarkable marksmanship as a performer with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. Oakley was an American icon and toured across Europe as well. In the 1940s and 1950s she was depicted in movies and television shows, although the depictions were rarely accurate. Henry will share information about Oakley’s early life, her rise to international stardom, and the event that brought her to the county in 1906. Henry has been researching Chautauqua County’s history since 1989. She previously worked for the Chautauqua County Historical Society and served as County Historian for 23 years. She currently works as Research Historian for NY State’s Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation. She is a state-registered historian. The history lecture series will continue in May, when local historian Pamela Brown presents a program on Chautauqua County’s only Civilian Conservation Corps camp, located in Panama. The program will take place at the library on Tuesday, May 19, at 6 p.m. For information about the lecture series or the Ripley Library, call 716-736-3913 or email director@ripleylibrary.org.
