Winterfest Medallion Hunt Begins With Clue

MAYVILLE – Organizers of the 2026 Mayville Winterfest event are once again holding a medallion hunt. Clues will run at the top of the Briefly column in The Post-Journal until the medallion is found. Here is the first clue:

There is a medallion of old,

That is hidden when outside is cold,

And finding this piece

Before events cease

The reward is so worth it we’re told

Whoever finds the medallion must call 716-269-4129 (Sorena) or 716-581-0440 (Ariel).

Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Surveys To Begin

Every winter, the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy conducts Hemlock Woolly Adelgid surveys across the region. The next two dates for volunteers to help survey hemlock trees for the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Cassadaga Lakes Nature Park preserve and 11 a.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and Jamestown Community College. To volunteer, visit https://www.chautauquawatershed.org. Hemlock Woolly Adelgid is most visible in winter. In the coldest months, the aphids go dormant and form cotton-like protective balls at the bases of hemlock needles, making it easy to observe and diagnose. This dormant period also makes it much less likely for surveyors to accidentally spread HWA from tree to tree by physically touching multiple hemlocks in an area during a survey. By surveying local hemlock trees and reporting any Hemlock Woolly Adelgid seen, conservancy officials can help with the implementation of targeted treatment plans to manage the infestations and prevent further spread.
