Former RTPI President To Speak Today
Jim Berry, retired president of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, will present a report on the bird life of the Sunnyside Marsh Preserve in Greenhurst at the Fluvanna Free Library today, Jan. 6, at 3:30 p.m. Sunnyside Marsh is a 4.5 acre nature preserve managed by the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy. The area, a vital link in the network of wetland preserves protecting Chautauqua Lake from runoff and sedimentation, provides critical plant and wildlife protection. For 10-years federally and state licensed master bird banders Dr. John Rappole and Berry have captured, banded and studied thousands of birds of 94 different species in this preserve. They recently published their findings in the paper “Seasonal Change in the Avian Community of a Western New York Shrub Swamp.” This program will present these findings, as well as provide background information on various plant and animal species found in the marsh.
