UPMC To Host Blood Drive Tuesday

The Community Blood Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania and Western New York will host a blood drive from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Dec. 23, at UPMC Chautauqua, 207 Foote Ave., Jamestown. “As we close out the year, we want to remind everyone that there’s no better way to give back than by giving blood,” said Megan Solensky, Community Relations Specialist at the Community Blood Bank. “December is a busy time filled with shopping, travel, and celebrations–but patients in our local hospitals continue to need blood every single day. This is a perfect opportunity to end the year with an act of generosity that truly saves lives.” The Community Blood Bank is highlighting the ongoing need for blood donations during the winter months, when collections often decline due to holiday schedules and weather. Appointments can be made by calling 814-456-4206 and are encouraged to reduce wait times though they aren’t required. Walk-ins will be taken as space allows.

4-H Hosts

Presentation Day Training

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s 4-H Program recently held a Presentation Day Training designed to help youth develop essential communication skills in preparation for the upcoming Presentation Day competition on Saturday, Jan. 24. The workshop focused on building confidence, clarity, and presence when speaking in front of others. During the training, participants explored how to organize and present ideas effectively, speak with confidence and connect with an audience. They learned about different types of presentations and their components, how to use visual aids to enhance delivery, and strategies for brainstorming and structuring presentations. The session also included practical tips on attire, appearance, and voice projection to help youth present themselves professionally. The training was led by 4-H volunteers Heather Lesch, Sara Couchman and Charlotte Couchman. Charlotte Couchman, a former Chautauqua County 4-H member, represented the county at the 2024 Eastern Nationals 4-H Horse Round-Up in Louisville, Ky., where she earned the title of national champion in the Public Speaking Horse Communications contest. Couchman is now a 4-H volunteer.
