Lawson Center To Host Lecture On Jamestown Boat Builder
BEMUS POINT – The Lawson Family Boating Heritage Museum in Bemus Point will continue its series of monthly lectures on topics relative to Chautauqua Lake on Wednesday with a free lecture on John Guenster, one of Jamestown’s first, and most prolific boat builders. Although Guenster built yachts, gasoline launches, sailboats, single, 2, 3 and 4-man rowing shells, and rowboats, by far, his most popular product were St. Lawrence skiffs, or as they were locally known, Chautauqua Lake double end rowboats. The Lawson Center has both a lapstrake double end rowboat and a lapstrake single shell that have been authenticated as having been made at Guenster’s Jamestown Boatlanding factory. Fletcher “Ned” Ward will present the story of that factory and Guenster’s place in Chautauqua Lake’ s boating history. The museum will open Wednesday at 6:30 for a social gathering and the opportunity to view the center’s collection. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. There is no fee; membership at the Lawson Center is not required.
