BBB Releases Tips To Avoid Eclipse Scams

The Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York is encouraging people to protect themselves from travel scams or counterfeit glasses as they prepare for the April 8 total solar eclipse passing through the region. While there have not yet been scams tied to the eclipse reported to BBB Scam Tracker, it is important to stay vigilant as scammers often try to cash in on major events. If purchasing glasses, BBB encourages people to only purchase from reputable companies and vendors. Glasses that have punctured lenses or appear damaged should not be used. The American Astronomical Society has a list of approved vendors and shoppers are always advised to check business’s reputation on bbb.org. Glasses can also be safely purchased through BBB of Upstate New York. If booking a trip for the event, travelers are encouraged to only book travel with trusted rentals and hotels. Paying with a credit card will also always offer the greatest form of protection. To report scams, visit BBB Scam Tracker at BBB.org/ScamTracker.
