Bible Study Continues At Kaintone Church
KIANTONE — The second half of the Bible study on the end times continues at the Kiantone Congregational Church on Wednesday, Aug. 16, through Friday, Aug. 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This will focus on the chronology of the events yet to unfold, delve into the nature of the millennium disclosed in Revelation and when it occurs. County Conservation District To Meet
The Chautauqua County Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its monthly board meeting Wednesday, Aug. 16, at 8:30 a.m. at the Chautauqua County Soil and Water Conservation District office, 220 Fluvanna Ave., Suite 600, Jamestown. Mayville Senior Citizens To Gather August 17
MAYVILLE — The Mayville Senior Citizens will meet at noon Thursday, Aug. 17, at the VFW in Mayville for a Sloppy Joe dinner. Bring a dish to pass. The speakers will be from the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Division of unsolved cases. Members will also be able to sign up for the chicken barbecue meal on Saturday, Sept. 16.
Historical Society To Host Program
MAYVILLE — The Chautauqua Town Historical Society will host a program on Albion Tourgee on Thursday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Chautauqua Town Building, the former Mayville School building, meeting room, 2 Academy St., Mayville. The speaker is Mike Rohlin, who is a local historian and history teacher at Chautauqua Lake Central School. Albion Tourgee defended Plessy in the famous 1896 Plessy vs. Ferguson Supreme Court case that yielded the ‘separate but equal’ ruling. Tourgee is credited with the expression ‘color blind justice,’ for which he fought his entire adult life. Tourgee was one of the foremost abolitionists before the Civil War. During Reconstruction he served as a judge in North Carolina. After Reconstruction he turned to writing and publishing. His novel, A Fool’s Errand, was a bestseller. He moved to Mayville in 1881, lived here, and continued his successful writing career. He was buried in the Mayville Cemetery. The public is welcome to attend.
Annual Picnic Set For Leon
LEON — The town of Leon will host its annual town picnic/fire equipment display on Saturday, Aug. 19, beginning at noon with lunch served starting at 1 p.m. The event is open to all past and present town of Leon residents. This event is sponsored by the Leon Fire Commissioners in conjunction with the Leon Town Board, the Leon Historical Society, and the Leon Fire Department and Auxiliary. Provided will be barbecued chicken, hot dogs, chips/snacks, water, lemonade, iced tea, paper products, silverware, and condiments. Attendees are asked to bring a dish to pass. Lawn chairs are encouraged. There will be fire equipment displays, games for children/adults, music by D.J., a Penny Royal display with Fred Milliman, Outback display with Erik Cullen, and historical society displays. There will also be a special presentation entitled, âLove Letters of a Civil War Soldier from Leonã by Tina Scherman to begin at 2:30 p.m. A gift/basket giveaway and 50/50 tickets will round out the festivities.
