Citizen Science Surveys To Be Held Throughout

The Summer

Throughout the summer, the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy is offering a series of citizen science surveys focused on Chautauqua Lake’s invasive plants. During the month of June, on-water surveys (paddles) will be held, weather permitting, today from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the Chautauqua Lake Outlet; on Friday, June 23, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in Prendergast Creek; and Wednesday, June 28, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in Ashville Bay. Participants will survey the local aquatic vegetation to look for and, if needed, report and carefully remove invasive plants such as water chestnut. Participation in these programs is free, but pre-registration is requested for the on-water surveys as attendance is capped at 10 participants per session. Email ais@chautauquawatershed.org to register. Anyone joining the on-water surveys will need to bring their own kayak or canoe and personal protective equipment (life jacket).  More information, including a full list of proposed on-water survey dates, locations, and launch times, can be found at www.chautauquawatershed.org. Funding for the program is provided in part by the Chautauqua Lake & Watershed Management Alliance.
