Sheriff Warns Of Money Scam

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office said it has recently become aware of of a fraud/scam case that has been circulating the area recently. In a statement Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Office said, “People are being contacted through email for various jobs or task or work from home, for a quick return on easy money. The individual will send you a check to deposit, and after you deposit the check they ask you to send them all or a portion of the money back to them through a cash app or to obtain other supplies. Once the money is sent back to the individual, the check deposited is returned for insufficient funds or canceled, ultimately leaving the individual responsible for the money which is anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000. The Sheriff’s Office wants to remind residents that easy quick money making schemes are generally fraudulent and will leave the victim with a tremendous amount of debt. If you have any information to any scams, please contact our office at 938-9191.”
