Frewsburg Gala Days Canceled

FREWSBURG — The Frewsburg Fire Company Inc. said the annual Gala Days, which was scheduled for June 10-13, has been canceled. “It was a very hard decision to make, but the well-being of our attendees and vendors is our top priority,” the department said in a statement. “After carefully considering current federal recommendations, New York state directives, and local mandates related to COVID-19, as well as the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic and logistical issues, the membership reached the decision not to proceed with the event this year. We hope that this passes and we can hold this event next year June 9-12.”

Ox Roast In Westfield Nixed

WESTFIELD — Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Westfield Firemen’s Exempt Association has canceled its annual Ox Roast, which is held each year during Alumni Weekend in Westfield. The Ox Roast was scheduled to be held on Sunday, July 12. The Ox Roast has been a staple for summer celebrations in the various villages and cities of Chautauqua County for decades. The Ox Roast and its connection to the fire department dates back to 1896 when Fireman’s Day was held. The tradition of an annual Ox Roast in Westfield began on Sunday, July 13, 1947, at Ottaway Park. That first annual Ox Roast was held from 1-9 p.m., and in addition to the beloved ox-roast sandwiches there were pony rides and races for children, bingo, and a band concert. Organizers look forward to welcoming everyone back to the next Ox Roast in July 2021.
