National Forest Offices Closing

The Allegheny National Forest said it is closing offices and implementing virtual services to protect the health and safety of employees and members of the public during the COVID-19 outbreak in accordance with guidance from federal and state authorities. Customers needing information, permits. and maps are encouraged to call 1-814-728-6100 during regular business hours for customer service. “As we work through an unpredictable and rapidly changing situation, health and safety is our number one priority,” said Jamie Davidson, Forest Supervisor. “We are committed to continuing to support our communities and fulfill our mission as we all work together to minimize the impacts and spread of COVID-19.” These actions have been taken based on the best available medical advice to limit gatherings of large numbers of people and to promote social distancing. Visitors are encouraged to contact their local forest or ranger district or visit www.fs.usda.gov/allegheny for the latest office hours and availability. Visitors to our National Forests are urged to take the precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. BPU Crews To Work On Westside

The Jamestown Board of Public Utilities said water crews will be working on Lowe and Fairmount avenues on the west side of Lakewood performing valve work beginning at 8 a.m. today. Traffic on Fairmount Avenue will be open but motorists are asked to slow down in the area near Cinema 8 where employees are working. Water on Lowe Avenue will be off periodically for up to two hours. Discolored water on the west side of Lakewood, traveling west to Cottage Park, Ashville and North Harmony may occur for 12 to 24 hours.

Suspect In Custody After Thruway Incident

A suspect was in custody after a menacing complaint on the New York State Thruway in near the Silver Creek exit. At approximately 9:35 a.m., the New York State Police responded to a menacing complaint involving a shotgun. Troopers located and stopped the vehicle in question near mile marker 455.1 westbound, in the town of Hanover. After a physical confrontation with troopers, the suspect was taken into custody. Two troopers suffered minor injuries and were transported for treatment. Early reports indicated a neck injury and a broken hand. Several weapons and a suspicious package were located in the vehicle. The State Police Bomb Disposal Unit were called to the scene to assist with the investigation.

RTPI Announces Museum Closure

Due to recent public health and safety concerns, the Roger Tory Peterson Institute said it has made the decision to close its museum until further notice. Because of this, several upcoming events and exhibitions have been canceled or postponed. The exhibition “Stefan Savides: Birds in Bronze,” originally scheduled for April 3, has been postponed until the fall. New exhibition dates, including an artist’s reception, will be announced soon. “We realize that these are challenging times for everyone, but thank you for your continued support of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute,” the organization said. “We look forward to reopening our doors to you soon. In the meantime, if you’re nearby, please keep in mind that our grounds and trails are open.”
