Indoor Triathlon Set For Feb. 1

CHAUTAUQUA — The 12th annual Kick Cabin Fever Indoor Triathlon will take place on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 9 a.m. at Chautauqua Health and Fitness at Turner Community Center at the Chautauqua Institution. Cheryl Burns, a local triathlete, began the indoor triathlon one year after her brother, Marty Miller, died by suicide due to several years of depression. The intent of the event is to get people moving during one of the toughest winter months in Chautauqua County. All proceeds for the triathlon stay in Chautauqua County for suicide prevention efforts. Last year, proceeds were donated to The Community Alliance for Suicide Prevention. The alliance was formed when local professionals from the mental health and other health care fields saw a great need in the community for supports and education around suicide prevention. These community members and others answered the call for action and started The Community Alliance for Suicide Prevention. Over the past several years, the alliance and its partner agencies have worked together to train local community members from all walks of life in suicide prevention and awareness.

Meetings About Diabetes Wed.

The National Diabetes Prevention Program can help to prevent type 2 diabetes with various lifestyle changes. Two information meetings about the upcoming program will be held on Wednesday at 2 and 7 p.m. at UPMC Chautauqua. Interested individuals should attend one of the meetings to learn more. The 16 core sessions of the prevention program that will be held at UPMC Chautauqua will focus on the process of adopting lifestyle changes for healthy eating and physical activity.

Blood Drive Will Be Held Wed.

CLYMER — An American Red Cross blood drive will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Clymer Central SChool, 8672 Main St., Clymer. The American Red Cross currently has a critical need for blood donors of all blood types – especially type O. To make an appointment, use the Red Cross Blood Donor App at www.redcrossblood.org/blood-donor-app.html, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call (800) 733-2767. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Committee Seeks Nominations

The Pine Valley Central School District Wall of Fame Committee is seeking nominations for induction in 2020 into the Pine Valley Wall of Fame. The purpose is to honor graduates from Pine Valley Central School, living or deceased, who have distinguished themselves in a specific field of endeavor, in civic affairs, in humanitarian affairs, or in activities which merit special recognition. Applications can be obtained at pval.org or by contacting the superintendent’s office at 988-3293 ext. 3307. A nominating committee of administrators, staff and community residents will select the inductees from applications submitted by members of the public. Nominations will be accepted until Friday, Feb. 14. A brunch for family and friends will be held in honor of the inductee on Sunday, June 28.
