Street Closure Announced

Jeffrey Lehman, P.E., director of Public Works for the city of Jamestown, announced that East Third Street from Pine Street to North Main Street will be closed to traffic Monday from approximately 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to facilitate delivery of equipment for repairs to The Signature Center. Motorists must use alternate routes of travel.

Thrift Shop Adds Brand-Name Items

St. Luke’s Thrift Shop, 409 Pine St., between East Fourth and East Fifth streets, Jamestown has added brand-name clothing, purses by Coach, Tignanelo, Hobo International and Vera Bradley and shoes by Michael Kors; Brazil’s Zuka brand and Sundance International. These items retail at much higher prices elsewhere than at the Thrift Shop. The shop is open for sales and receiving on Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Receiving only is on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon. Bariatric Support Group To Meet

The Jamestown Bariatric Support Group will meet on Monday at 6 p.m. in the James Prendergast Library Community Room, second floor, 509 Cherry St., Jamestown. An elevator is available to the second floor and parking is free. The activity is ”Game Night” and an open discussion will also be held. Brush Collection Set For Saturdays

FREWSBURG- The town of Carroll will be accepting residential yard waste and brush at the old highway garage, behind the Town Hall, 5 W. Main St., Frewsburg, on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The brush collection is for Carroll residents only. Those who do not already have a brush dump permit can get one at the Carroll Town Clerk’s Office during normal business hours. No commercial loads of yard waste, trees or brush are accepted.

Church Concert Set For Sunday

FREDONIA – The Fredonia First United Methodist Church will host a concert at 7 p.m. on Sunday featuring the FFUMC Chancel Choir, members of the Western New York Chamber Orchestra and soloist Dr. Angela Haas. Music will include ”Laudate Dominum” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the ”Little Organ Mass” by Franz Joseph Haydn . Registration Set

Jamestown Public Schools will hold a Kindergarten Registration for fall 2016 on Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the district administration offices, 197 Martin Road. The registration is only for students who are new to the Jamestown Public Schools. This registration is not for students who are currently enrolled in UPK programs at any Jamestown Public School UPK site, or at other UPK sites, including Head Start at Bush Elementary School, Holy Family, Connections South sites, A Children’s Place, YMCA Heritage House or YWCA. For those students new to the district, any child who resides in the city of Jamestown and who will be 5 on or before Dec. 1 is eligible to attend kindergarten in the district this fall. Water Main

Flushing Planned

WESTFIELD – Water main flushing will begin in the village of Westfield on Monday at 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., weekdays, until Friday, May 20 or until the flushing is finished. Flushing of Westfield’s water mains will begin on the west side of the village and progress to the east side from the highest point south and moving in a northerly direction. Flushing will end with the west Route 5 water district. Flushing will cause roily water. Residents should stock a supply of water for drinking and cooking before flushing begins. Care should be taken not to draw the roily water into hot water tanks, heating systems and especially clothes washers.

Scouts Collecting Donations

Cub Scout Pack 115 of Jamestown will be collecting non-perishable food items for the St. Susan Center on Saturday. Donations can be dropped off to Scouts and leaders at Conduit Ministries at 120 Delaware Ave. from 1-3 p.m. Any nonperishable donations should not be outdated. The St. Susan Center is always in need of 100 percent juice, crackers and unsweetened cereal.

Ellington To Host Picnic Sunday

ELLINGTON – The Ellington Town Picnic will host a breakfast buffet Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Ellington Fire Hall. Featured items include bacon, sausage, eggs, potatoes, pancakes and french toast. The cost is $8 for adults; $4.50 for children 4-12; and under 3, free. All proceeds from the breakfast will be used toward the cost of the 104th Town Picnic to be held from Aug. 5-7.

Historical Society Begins Season

SINCLAIRVILLE – The Valley Historical Society museum in Sinclairville will open to the public for the first time this year on Sunday, May 1, from 2-5 p.m. The museum contains many artifacts of local interest and society members are anxious to show off the many improvements made to the museum over the winter. The Valley Historical Society museum building was constructed in 1845 as a store and is the oldest commercial brick building in Chautauqua County. Admission to the museum is free to the public.

Access Channel 5 is airing the 2015 Chautauqua Institution lecture series. Red Cross Course Set For Tonight

Celtic Vespers Service Scheduled

WESTFIELD – The First Presbyterian Church of Westfield will host a special Celtic Vespers service tonight at 7 p.m. The service is influenced by and based on ancient Celtic worship and its modern survivals in worship communities including the famous Iona Community in Scotland. It includes evening prayer and responsorial Psalms, prayers from the Carmina Gadelica, a candlelight procession, brief incense rite, music based on Celtic tunes and a recitation of The Lord’s Prayer in Gaelic. Exhibit Proceeds To Benefit Library

A portion of proceeds from the sale of pictures by William S. “Butch” Poole of Jamestown on exhibit at James Prendergast Library will be donated to the library. The show consists of framed traditional and iPhone photographs. Poole is sharing proceeds from sales, through Friday, to show appreciation to the library for the opportunity to display his work. He taught high school biology in Jamestown for 33 years and takes most of his pictures while hiking. The library is located at 509 Cherry St., Jamestown. Latter Day Saints Announce Mission

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 851 Forest Ave., Jamestown, announced that Brett Alan Syndergaard, the son of Paul and Cindy Syndergaard of Locabello, Idaho, will serve a mission. He also has four brothers and a sister-in-law that have been on a mission to serve the church. While in Jamestown he hope to invite as many people who will listen to come closer to Jesus Christ. When asked his thoughts of Jamestown he stated it’s golden, very quiet and easy going and he is excited to spend his time serving the joyful people of Jamestown.

ST. BONAVENTURE – The St. Bonaventure University Jazz Band will host a big band dance at 7:30 p.m., Thursday at St. Bonaventure University’s Doyle Hall Dining Room. Admission to the “Swing Into Spring” dance, which includes light refreshments, is free, but donations are welcome, said Dr. Les Sabina, professor of music and director of the Jazz Band. BPU Performing Water Work Today

LAKEWOOD – Jamestown Board of Public Utilities Water Division employees will install a water valve in Lakewood on Lakeview Avenue at Fairmount today. Water will be shut off at 8 a.m. on Fairmount Avenue from Fairwood to Cherry Street, Lakeview Avenue, Holly Lane, Bemus Street and Highland Avenue. Water will be off until valve work is completed. Once repairs are made and water is restored, water in the village of Lakewood may be discolored for 12 to 18 hours. Care should be taken not to do laundry unless water at a residence appears to be clear.

Legion Hosting Sunday Breakfast

The Herman Kent American Legion Post 777 invites members, guests and friends to the monthly breakfast on Sunday, April 17. Historical Society Planning Events

FLUVANNA – The Fluvanna Community Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the Fluvanna Community Church. The main goal is to restore “The Old Meeting Place” in Fluvanna to hold memorabilia of the surrounding Fluvanna area from years past right up to now. Calamari Sisters To Perform

Water Shut-Off Set For Saturday

Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU) Water Division employees will install a water valve in Lakewood on Lakeview Avenue at Fairmount on Saturday morning. Water will be shut off at 8 a.m. Saturday on Fairmount Avenue from Fairdale to Cherry Street, Lakeview Avenue, Holly Lane, Bemus Street and Highland Avenue. Water will be off until valve work is completed. Once repairs are made and water is restored, water in the village of Lakewood may be discolored for 12-18 hours. Care should be taken not to do laundry unless water at your residence appears to be clear.

Ten-Week Swim Lesson Kicks Off

Bus Trip To Vidler’s Set

The Jamestown Area Senior Center announced the bus trip to Vidler’s in East Aurora on May 18 will leave from the Jamestown Community College Annex Building parking lot on Falconer Street. Women’s Group Preparing Grants

The Upper New York Conference United Methodist Women Projects Committee is accepting grant applications to help new projects become self-reliant. Lifeguarding Class To Kick Off

YMCA?Hosting SCUBA?Classes

The YMCA will be offering a SCUBA certification class on Tuesday and Wednesday nights beginning April 5 and running for six weeks. Class times are 7-10 p.m. Tuesday classes are spent in the classroom and Wednesdays are spent in the pool. The fee for SCUBA is $200 for Jamestown YMCA members and $250 for all others. The registration fee includes classroom instruction, pool training and the use of selected SCUBA equipment. There is an additional book fee of $25 for the text. Support Group To Meet Monday

The Jamestown Bariatric Support Group will meet on Monday at 6 p.m. in the James Prendergast Library Community Room, second floor, 509 Cherry St., Jamestown. An elevator is available to the second floor and parking is free. The topic is ”What are the top three things you want to do when you are at your ideal weight and healthiness?” An open discussion will also be held and new handouts will be available. Meetings are open to anyone who had the surgery, is in the process of having surgery, thinking of having the surgery and support members of the individual. Alternate Parking Starts Today

Starting today, monthly alternate parking will be in effect in the city of Jamestown. Vehicles should be parked only on the odd-numbered side of the street during odd-numbered months and only on the even-numbered side of the street during even-numbered months. Vehicles should be moved at 10 a.m. on the first day of each month. There is no grace period.

Legion To Host Karaoke Tonight

Open For Spring

St. Luke’s Thrift Shop, 409 Pine St., between East Fourth and East Fifth streets, Jamestown is officially open for the spring season. All departments are fully stocked with spring/summer merchandise. Off-street parking is available in the church lot off East Fifth Street. The shop is open for sales and receiving each Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and receiving only on Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to noon. Host Breakfast

FALCONER – The Falconer Rotary Club will host a pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Falcon’s Nest. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12. Tickets are available at the door or from any Falconer Rotary Club member. Those attending are also invited to bring returnable cans and bottles to the breakfast. They will be redeemed and the proceeds used to pay for community projects.

Study Club To Meet Monday

BEMUS POINT – The Bemus Point Study Club will hold their April meeting Monday. The club meets at St. Timothy Lutheran Church on Route 430. Members are invited to bring a dish to pass and their own table service for a tureen supper beginning at 6 p.m.. No reservations are needed. The program begins about 7 p.m. and will feature “Real estate around the Lake.” Members and their guests are welcome to attend the supper and program or arrive later for only the program portion. Anyone interested in the club is welcome to attend the April meeting or inquire at the Bemus Point Library at 386-2274.
