Alternate Parking Begins Tuesday

Daily alternate parking in the city of Jamestown goes into effect Tuesday. Vehicles should be parked only on the odd-numbered side of the street during odd-numbered days and on the even-numbered side of the street during even-numbered days. Daily parking alternates at 10 a.m. with no grace period.

County Planning Board To Meet

Holiday Craft Fair Accepting Vendors

Bethel Baptist Christian Academy will hold its annual holiday craft fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, in the gymnasium of Bethel Baptist Christian Academy, 200 Hunt Road, Jamestown. There will also be concessions and a bake sale. Proceeds will benefit student activities and scholarship programs. Vendor spaces are available for $30 until Oct. 11 and $40 after Oct. 11. SOUTH DAYTON – The South Dayton United Methodist Church will hold a giant rummage sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, with a bag sale at noon. A bake sale will also be featured both days.

Fall Festival Begins Oct. 5

BLOCKVILLE – The Harmony Historical Society is getting things ready for its fall festival on Oct. 5-6 at the society’s facility on Open Meadows Road in Blockville. Buildings will be open with demonstrations of things from the past. There will be entertainment both days as well as food. Vendors are welcome to participate. For more information, call 640-5843. The Historical Society has been able to obtain the private property that was located within its property. A building that was on the property has been removed and society officials said the new area will be a real asset to society activities.

Seneca Nation To Hold Ceremony

Saturday, the Seneca Nation of Indians will hold its annual “Remember the Removal” ceremony to commemorate the taking of the nation’s land to build the Kinzua Dam. Close to 50 years ago, 600 Senecas were forced from 10,000 acres of their ancestral homeland by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and their homes burned in preparation for construction. The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Seneca Allegany Administration Building, Salamanca, where a walk of remembrance will take place honoring the Cornplanter Grant. Johnny Cash wrote and recorded a song in 1964 – “As Long as the Grass Shall Grow” – about the forced removal of the Senecas. Seneca Nation President Barry E. Snyder Sr. will give opening remembrance remarks.

Benefit Set

For Will Lutgen

HARTFIELD – A benefit for Will Lutgen, a local independent contractor, U.S. Navy veteran and Chautauqua Lake Central School graduate, will be held starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hartfield Bay Cafe, 9040 Route 430. Due to illness, Lutgen is unable to work, so friends are holding the benefit to help with medical and living expenses. The benefit will include Chinese auctions and food. A $10 donation is requested at the door, which includes full access to the “Beast Fest” which includes many meats and side dishes. There will be beer available.

Genesis House Benefit Planned

RANDOLPH – Grace Episcopal Church, 21 Washington St., Randolph, will host a lunch to benefit Genesis House from noon-3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5. There is no charge for the lunch, but those attending should take a new household item donation to help a family starting a new life. The lunch is open to the community. Representatives from Genesis House will be available to answer questions about their work with the homeless. There will be door prizes and a handmade quilt will be given away. Sluga To Talk Paper Trail Friday

Love Bear Project To Hold Dinner

WESTFIELD – Project Love Bear, a nonprofit organization that provides more than 200 children with new coats, hats, gloves, scarves, clothing and items on their Christmas list for the children of Ripley, will host a chicken barbecue starting at noon on Saturday at the Crossroads Craft and Farm Market in Westfield. Canine Rescue To Hold Sale

WESTFIELD – Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue will offer many items up for sale in the Learning Center at 7540 North Gale St. in Westfield on Friday and Saturday. The hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The mission at NCCR is to provide sanctuary for stray and abandoned puppies and dogs. NCCR then finds each dog a loving, responsible and permanent home. Between 250 and 300 dogs are rescued by NCCR each year. NCCR is a no kill shelter that receives no state or federal funds.

Reunion Is Oct. 4

Thrift Shop Has New Selection

St. Luke’s Thrift Shop, 409 Pine St. between East Fourth and East Fifth streets, Jamestown, has a new selection of sweaters and jackets for men, women, and children. “New” fall and winter clothing for men, women, including junior and plus sizes, and children is available. Small household items and jewelry are also available. All items are in good, clean condition. Fall hours for sales and receiving are Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; receiving only is on Tuesday 9 a.m. to noon. Off-street parking is available in the church parking lot off East Fifth Street. This is a nonprofit enterprise with all proceeds going to local outreach, and has been in operation for 31 years.

Family Night Held Every Thursday

The Winifred Crawford Dibert Boys & Girls Club offers Family Night every Thursday from 6-9 p.m. Families must come together and stay together with parents supervising their children in program areas. The game rooms and computer lab are open from 6-9 p.m. Swimming is open from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Lifeguards are on duty but parents must be in the pool or pool area while their children swim. The third Thursday of every month is the Family Plus event. For Sept. 19 there will be a Back To School Supplies Bingo Fun Night where families can play bingo to win notebooks, crayons, pens, markers and other school supply prizes. The cost for family night is $1 for nonmembers (ages 5 and up); and free for members and those under 5. The WCD Boys & Girls Club of Jamestown is a United Way agency and all youth programming is funded in part by the United Way of Southern Chautauqua County.

Active Aging Event Is Sept. 26

The sixth annual Journey to Active Aging Event workshop and luncheon will be Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. Doors open at 8 a.m.; the program begins at 9. Lunch will take place at noon. Dr. Steve Dofitas of the Dent Neurological Institute, Buffalo, will be the keynote speaker. Breakfast Season Begins Sunday

CELORON – The Herman Kent American Legion Post 777 in Celoron is holding its first breakfast for the new season on Sunday. The post will have a full buffet with scrambled eggs, ham, sausage, biscuits and gravy, french toast and danish. Also featured is the 777 three-egg omelet made to order. Civil War Event Set For Today

MACHIAS – The Cattaraugus County Museum will host a small encampment of Civil War re-enactors today. Represented will be members of the 154th NY, Berdans Sharpshooters, 34th NC, 4th SC, and a Louisiana Tiger. There will be a 154th NY Gettysburg memorial service at 11 a.m. and a “School of the Soldier” for any children in attendance. The museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the re-enactors will be on-site all day to display, discuss and demonstrate their equipment, uniforms and arms. Connie Whiteman, president, presided. Nancy Miller gave a reading and Eivor Keller led in prayer, a flag salute and song. The treasurer’s and secretary’s reports, presented by Pennie Harvey and Richard Anderson, were approved as read. Thank you cards from Joanne Osman and the Southwestern Senior Class were read. Charlotte Johnson spoke on the need for more knitters and stated a sign-up sheet was available.

Blood Drive Set For Thursday

The public is invited to donate blood at the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU) Red Cross Blood Drive set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the BPU Education Room, 92 Steele St., Jamestown. Cancer Group To Meet Wednesday

The Breast Cancer Support Group will meet for dinner at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Friendly’s restaurant, followed by a round robin discussion at 7 p.m. with members telling about their journey with breast cancer. New member Jenifer Rader will speak on her past few months with breast cancer and how her reconstruction is being done. Jacob’s Ladder Class Begins

Ferry Program Airs Today

Jim Roselle’s visit to the Bemus Point-Stow Ferry for his show, “Times of Your Life” will air on Access Channel 5. The hour-long program will air today and run through Friday at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. daily. The town of North Harmony pig roast for the Veterans Memorial fundraiser coverage will air on Access Channel 5. The 10-minute program will air today and run through Friday at 1:50 p.m. and 7:50 p.m.

Lot Owners Need To Remove Items

ELLINGTON – Ellington Cemetery lot owners are asked to remove all decorations by Oct. 1 to allow the caretaker to complete fall cleanup. All remaining decorations will be removed by the caretaker. Winter wreaths are permitted from Nov. 1 to April 1.

A private contractor will conduct a water flow test at the Gateway Center on Water Street in Jamestown on Monday, according to the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities. As a result, the area may experience discolored water on Monday and into Tuesday morning.

Outdoor Club

To Ride Today

The Allegheny Outdoor Club (AOC) will ride bikes today on the Bayfront Bike Trail in Erie. Participants will meet at 9 a.m. at the trailhead near the tennis courts at Penn State Behrend then ride to the Tom Ridge Center. This will be a shuttle ride. Before returning to the Behrend starting point, participants will have a late lunch at Joe Root’s Restaurant.

BEMUS POINT – The Thule Lodge, located at 4123 Pancake Hill Road, will hold a dinner this Friday at the lodge from 5-7 p.m. All dinners are open to everyone. Jay Carlo and Frances Lunetta will host a meeting of the Marco Polo Auxiliary at 6 p.m. today. Twenty-four members attended a Father’s Day tureen, chaired by Ruth Boscia and Sandy Cusimano. Minutes and the treasury reports were given by Frances Lunetta and Dorothy Galati. Louis Carlo, Carmen Lunetta and Joe Panzica received gift cards. Freda Zanetta, Ruth Boscia, Norma Gagliano and Jen Juul celebrated birthdays. Mary Racitano won the pink elephant.

Outdoor Club To Ride Saturday

The Allegheny Outdoor Club will ride bikes 17 miles on the Cuyahoga Valley Towpath Trail within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio on Saturday. The ride will begin at 1 p.m. at Peninsula and end at Rockside. Once at Rockside, riders will load their bikes onto the train and return to their starting point. There is a $3 charge for the train ride. The group will then tent camp or rent cabins at nearby facilities and then do a second ride on Sunday.
