Portland Event To Appear On TV

Portland town board members reenacted the first board meeting at a recent bicentennial dinner held in Brocton. Access Channel 5 will televise the event at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day with the final airing on May 3. Playing the role of supervisor Thomas Prendergast was the current supervisor Dan Schrantz. Other participants were clerk Roxanne Sobecki as Asa Hall with the remaining board portrayed as follows: Rick Manzella as James Montgomery, Jerry Boltz as John Brewer, Gary Miller as Oliver Stetson and Al Valentin as William Bell. Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Chautauqua, North Harmony, Sherman, Westfield and Portland areas.

Driving Course To Be Held

Historical Society To Meet In Busti

The Busti Historical Society will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the meeting room of the Busti Museum on Mill Street. In addition to the business meeting there will be an illustrated talk by Donald Sandy about mills in Sweden. Topics for discussion will include participation in the Busti Memorial Day activities; the June 9 community dedication of the Mill, celebrating the conclusion of the 40-year Mill restoration project; the rescheduled June 29 Town Picnic with music by Old Dawg Bluegrass; and the Sept. 29 Apple Harvest Festival. Celoron UMC To Hold Dinner, Sale

CELORON – The United Methodist Church of Celoron is holding a spaghetti and meatball dinner and sale Wednesday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. to benefit the church’s youth fund. The dinner features Kirby’s special homemade meatballs, spaghetti, roll, vegetable and beverage. A bake sale and second-hand goods sale will also be held. The church is located at 28 E. Marco Polo auxiliary members will meet Wednesday. The meeting will be hosted by Norma Gagliano and Lois Butcher. Linda Casamento and Mary Rasitano, president, hosted a recent dinner meeting. Rasitano led in prayer and the flag salute and also thanked the committee for the refreshments they provided. Celebrating birthdays were Linda Conti and Denise Rutkowski. Cub Scouts To Start Food Drive

CASSADAGA – Cassadaga Cub Scout Pack and Troop 219 will collect non-perishable food items for the annual Scouting For Food drive starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. Fundraiser Set For Sunday

PRIDE Event Set For Today

The YWCA Racial Justice committee and seven other organizations are sponsoring the inaugural Festival of PRIDE (Promoting Respect for Individual Differences for Everyone) at 5:30 p.m. today at the Dr. Lillian Vitanza Ney Renaissance Center, 119-121 W. Benefit Planned For Saturday

ASHVILLE – The LLAMA Club, Route 474, Ashville, will hold a spaghetti dinner benefit from 2-8 p.m. Saturday for Steve Donelson, a lifelong Panama resident who was hospitalized in Erie and in Pittsburgh for an extended period of time, having undergone emergency surgery and an extensive recovery period. The benefit will help the family meet the medical expenses. The benefit will include live music, giveaways and silent auction. Donations for the silent auction and giveaway are still being accepted.

Gerry To Hold Cleanup Day

The town of Gerry, village of Sinclairville and town of Charlotte will be hosting a cleanup day Saturday. People who want to volunteer their time can meet at the Sinclairville Village Hall on Lester Street in Sinclairville at 9 a.m. Municipal officials provide gloves, garbage bags and maps for choosing an area to clean up. Volunteers are asked to wear closed-toe shoes and wear bright reflective clothing. There will be coffee and doughnuts available at the village hall in Sinclairville. Thrift Shop Has New Items

St. Luke’s Thrift Shop, 409 Pine St., Jamestown, is overflowing with new items, including high-end ladies golf shoes, apparel and scrubs. The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. Donated items are received on those days as well as 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays. Proceeds from the shop, which is run by volunteers from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, RSVP and the community, are donated to local outreach programs.

Westside Women To Meet For Lunch

Benefit Concert Is Saturday

On Saturday, local band Teachers, Preachers … and Trent will perform a benefit concert for Southwestern High School’s Aftergrad Party. The show starts at 7 p.m. TPT is made up of local musicians and will be playing classic and pop hits from the 1970s to today. The band’s lineup consists of Adam Rohler on vocals and keyboards, Justin Joyner on vocals and guitar, Jay Baehr on guitars and vocals, Scott Lumia on bass guitar, Michael Tuccio on drums and Trent Stafford on lead guitar. Driving Course Begins Thursday

WESTFIELD – The YWCA Westfield will host an AARP-sponsored safe driving course from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The course is open to the general public, AARP membership is not required. Ross Grange To Meet Today

Ross Grange will meet today at the Falcon’s Nest Banquet Hall with members of the Falconer Central School Board presenting the program. A tureen supper will be at 6:30 p.m. followed by the program and business meeting. Those attending should bring a dish to share. Place settings and beverages will be furnished. JCC Shipwrecks Program Set

Shipwrecks of Lake Erie: Fire, Storm, and Collision will be explored Tuesday at Jamestown Community College. The non-credit program begins at 7 p.m. in the Carnahan Center. Tuition is $19. Mike and Georgeann Wachter, divers who have published books on Lake Erie shipwrecks, will outline the military and commercial vessels that have been lost on the lake since the 1700s. According to the Wachters, Lake Erie may have the largest concentration of shipwrecks per square mile of any body of water in the world.

TEA Party To Meet Tuesday

LAKEWOOD – Southern Tier TEA Party Patriots will hold its next general meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday at the Lakewood American Legion, 174 Chautauqua Ave., Lakewood. Lineup Changes For Comedy Show

There has been a change in the acts for tonight’s Wits n’ Giggles comedy show at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena. Outdoor Club To Clean Up Roads

On Saturday, the Allegheny Outdoor Club will take part in the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania at two area roads. Spaghetti Dinner Set For Sunday

SINCLAIRVILLE – A benefit spaghetti dinner will be held at noon Sunday in the Sinclairville Fire Hall dining room to help raise money for the Dewyea family of Sinclairville. Expect Water Issues Today

LAKEWOOD – Two water valve replacements taking place today in Lakewood will cause discolored water in most of the village all day and into this evening. In addition, customers in the vicinity of the valve replacements will be without water between 8:30 a.m. and noon today. YMCA To Offer Youth Karate

The Jamestown YMCA will offer youth karate for students ages 5 to 15 years and adult karate starting Tuesday through June 6. The classes will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:30 p.m. for youth and 5:30-7 p.m. for adults. Christina Kebort, a seventh-degree blackbelt in Shotokan Karate, will teach students self-esteem, respect, confidence, discipline and self-defense. She has more than 13 years experience in the karate arena. The youth class cost is $40 for YMCA Members and $60 for potential members, and the adult class cost is $40 for YMCA Members and $65 for potential members. The American Red Cross will host several blood drives this month. Training Sessions Begin Monday

Benefit Planned For Sunday

A benefit for Joey Weise of Jamestown will be held from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at The Q, 104 W. Second St., Jamestown. Friends are raising money to help Weise pay bills after complications from a sinus surgery in February. A main artery in his sinus area ruptured, making risky surgery necessary. Admission for the adults-only event is $8 and includes a pasta dinner, Chinese auction and bake sale. Entertainment will be provided by DJ Felony. Senior Report To Host Spanos

“Senior Report with Reed Powers” will have MaryAnn Spanos as the guest Saturday. Spanos is director of the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging. The live, call-in program airs from 9-10 a.m. Saturday. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 and 8 p.m. for some communities. Powers has been producing the television program since 1995. The series highlights senior citizen club news for 15 minutes with the remainder of the hour-long program devoted to the featured guest. The guest is subject to change. Senior Report is shown live on Saturday mornings on Time Warner cable systems covering the following communities: Brocton, Cassadaga, Chautauqua, Fredonia, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman, Stockton and Westfield on Channel 5. In Dunkirk, Falconer, Forestville, Hanover, Irving, Jamestown, Lakewood and Silver Creek the program is on channel 19. The show originates at the Access Channel 5 studio in Mayville.

AARP Board To Meet Thursday

The Jamestown AARP board of directors will meet Thursday in the parlors of First Lutheran Church at 10 a.m. The general meeting will be a free guided tour of the Jamestown train depot, conducted by Lee Harkness, manager, on Tuesday, April 9, at 1:30 p.m. Since free parking is limited, attendees should bring change for parking meters. There will also be a brief business meeting and refreshments. This meeting is open to the community.

Contra Dance To Be Held Friday

FREDONIA – The Fredonia Grange, 58 W. Main St., Fredonia, will host a first Friday community contra dance at 8 p.m. on April 5. The cost is $6 per person. Live music will be provided by Resistance Is Futile, an Irish band from Buffalo, featuring Anne Maroney, Werner Ceusters, Natalie Bennett and Mark Warford. All dances will be taught and called. Strides Offering Free SAT Prep

Chautauqua Striders is offering free SAT prep classes on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30-8 p.m. beginning April 8. The Jamestown Board of Education will meet on Monday, April 8, at 6 p.m. and go into Executive Session for “matters pertaining to the employment of a particular person.” The board will return to regular session to adjourn the meeting.

Cemetery To Begin Cleanup

The Lake View Cemetery will begin its annual spring cleanup on Monday, April 8. Any decorations not removed by that date will be disposed of by cemetery personnel. The cemetery will also begin locking its gates at 8:30 p.m. on that date.

Ballroom Dance Sessions Set

The next session of Ballroom Dance is scheduled to begin April 11 at the Jamestown YMCA. Classes will meet on Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. for eight weeks. This session will be geared for intermediate-level dancers and will follow the silver syllabus. More advanced figure patterns and amalgamations will be added as the students’ abilities progress. Loose, comfortable clothing and smooth-soled shoes are recommended attire for ballroom dance. Partners are not mandatory. Space is limited, and advance registration is required by April 9.
