Canine Companion: Dogs Provide Protection, Warmth

Hey, guys. I hope all of you had an amazing week as per usual. This week we’re talking about sleep. Ha. That’s funny since it’s the weekend and we’re all going to sleep in late, right? Well, not me. But, some of you might be able to. I wake up extremely early even on weekends to a hug and a kiss from my two little boys and our dog.

Here’s where I am going with this, though. Every night, every single night, at around 9, my dog is sitting at the top of the stairway (sometimes not patiently) for me to go to bed. As many of you know, I don’t really sleep much. Anyway, once I tuck the kids in, he knows it’s time to go lay down. Once I have finished up household chores (as many mommies do), I have been writing from my bedroom at night of which my dog absolutely adores.

Once I am in bed, he lays right next to me. When I say right next to me, I mean literally. His body is touching mine, with his head on the pillow, and his body under the blankets. That expensive dog bed; he would never use it. He prefers to sleep in bed with me.

This digs into the topic of “are all dogs like this?” And, what’s the behavioral explanation for this?

There are many reasons including protection and warmth, but the reason I am sure you’re thinking of is for affection. And, you’re exactly right. Your dog wants to feel close to you and let you know how much she loves you.

Your dog sleeping next to you also means he considers you to be a member of his ‘pack’ and you have a strong bond together.

If your dog isn’t one who sleeps in bed with you, and would rather sleep in that dog bed, don’t get discouraged. Remember, every dog is unique and has their own preferences just like we do. Some dogs become overheated easily. Some dogs are anxious. Others simply like their own space.

If you’re one of those people who see sleeping with your dog as unsanitary, that’s not a problem either and it’s completely understandable.

But, I do want to talk about the benefits here. For those who sleep with their dog, research has shown you’re more likely to get a good night’s rest if you’re cuddling up with your pup. You’re cozy and you’re next to a light-sleeping protector. You’re able to sleep soundly knowing your dog will alert you of anything abnormal.

For those who have anxiety, sleeping with your dog is also known to assist in reducing your anxiety both when you’re awake and when you’re resting. Studies have shown those who experience difficulty falling asleep are able to rest easier with a dog by their side.

So, that’s that. There is a scientific explanation behind it. But, the best way to say it is your dog loves you. He loves you and just wants to be next to you.
