I’m So Tired
Every few columns I allude to some mental or physical exhaustion as a result of my many activities and lack of regular routine.
Well, friends, this week I think it’s finally caught up to me.
It began almost a week ago; my birthday last Friday, to be exact. Without getting into many of the sordid details about what a night on the town with friends for a birthday celebration entails, I can say my brain has been trying to play catch up since last Saturday.
Granted, it wasn’t all celebrations-related, but between that and the fact that I no longer have any semblance of a set sleep schedule I don’t think I’m really doing myself many favors. And as the week drags on I find myself more and more worn with every passing day. Even simple tasks like writing a column are turning into a struggle.
It first became evident during Cold Lazarus’ Saturday show at Shawbucks, which I regret to say wasn’t my finest performance. It was still far from my worst, as well, but I definitely lacked the accuracy and energy that I usually pride myself on when it comes to gigging. I just had such a difficult time concentrating, and the fact that the crowd ebbed and flowed in uncharacteristic fashion didn’t really help my energy level either.
I definitely am not intending this to sound like a complaint. Obviously, I have no one to blame but myself. But it is something that I should probably be looking into as far as making some healthier lifestyle changes. Because 6 a.m. weekend bed times don’t really mesh that well with a day job during the week.
But, regardless, I’m pressing on and getting my work done in a timely fashion. I think I’d just like to be feeling a little better when I do it, moving forward.
And yet tonight I’ll be traveling up to Buffalo for a rare Thursday night gig. We’ll be opening for the Buffalo band Intrepid Travelers as they kick off their five-week “Cinco en Mayo” Thursday night residency at Nietzsche’s this month. Luckily, we had a chance to meet these guys a couple weekends ago when they played at Mojo’s, which made for a great and timely ice breaker.
I’m really looking forward to it, but I’m really starting to feel the old adage “No rest for the wicked” becoming more pertinent to my situation. Once this weekend rolls around I think some much-needed reorientation and solitude is in order to get myself realigned and back on track.
Life has been pretty decent to me as of late, and I’d like to keep it that way.
And now, here’s some of what you can expect to find in the area this week.
