Is The Moon Swiss Cheese? Depends On How You Vote

Imagine those who believe the earth is flat are mostly Republicans. Or imagine Einstein’s theories are believed mostly by Democrats and not much by Republicans.

In fact, you probably cannot imagine such. That is because we believe science is science. Our moon is 238,900 miles away. All of us, save a few crackpots, buy that. All of us Democrats. All of us Republicans. All of us Independents.

Why then is climate-change-global-warming so much a party issue? You probably have figured out that it is. There is a new survey from Gallup that confirms it.

Gallup asked folks whether they think the seriousness of global warming is generally exaggerated. About 69 percent of Republicans said it is. Only 4 percent of Democrats did. Meanwhile, 34 percent of Independents said it is.

That is a mighty big difference. Why such a disparity? Aren’t we told by climate-change believers that this is settled science? Just like Einstein’s theories and the laws of gravity are. After all, 97 percent of scientists… and all that.

You don’t suppose Donald Trump’s skepticism has persuaded most Republicans that he knows more than all those scientists. That could not be, could it?

Well, what is it that has persuaded most Republicans that climate change is no big deal? What is it that has persuaded most Democrats that it is?

About 82 percent of Democrats believe the effects of global warming have already begun. Polar bears tell them this, if there are any left. And glaciers melting like ice cream at a July picnic alarm them. And the arctic ice is vanishing. Well, it was vanishing. Lately it has made a bit of a comeback. And how about those ocean waters? They are rising to consume islands in the Pago Pagos or wherever?

Democrats lose sleep over these effects. Well, 91 percent of them do. Only 33 percent of Republicans give a toss. Do more Republican DNAs contain a cynicism ingredient? Do more Republicans knock back a few whiskies before bed? Thereby sleeping better?

The gap is even greater when it comes to the causes of global warming. We have found the enemy, and he is us! That is a rallying cry for the Democrats. Nearly 90 percent of them reckon you and me are causing these climate-changes. We spew CO2 and everybody knows CO2 is bad for us. Only 35 percent of Republicans believe humans are affecting the climate.

Why on earth would climate change and global warming be, or become, a political matter? Did Al Gore’s preachings tar the subject with a Democrat brush? Are there millions of Republicans who reject all claims only because Gore has led the way?

Skeptics are alive and well. There is a small army of scientists that churns out papers and opinions that reject claims of believer-scientists. Or strongly challenge them. Or ask awkward questions that believers cannot answer. You can find a lot about their work at sites like Climate Depot (climatedepot.com).

Why is it that what they publish attracts more belief from Republicans and Independents than from Democrats?

Is it because those greedy Republicans want to keep making zillions from oil and gas and coal? Their lust for riches has blinded them to the disaster that climate change threatens? They have sold their souls to big-oil devils? Is that it?

Or is it because those emotional Democrats have been gulled by anti-capitalist Greens? Are they putty in the claws of the Left’s propaganda machinery?

It is a curious situation. More than curious when you consider how billions of folks are affected by the policies that grow from this scientific stew.

This is the sad reality. A frightening one to many. Some highly-respected scientists can produce a study that thus and such is happening to the climate. Most Republicans will reject their findings. Most Democrats will accept them. Or vice-versa.

Whole lotta politics goin’ on.
