Route 430: The Washboard Highway
To The Reader’s Forum:
Route 430 which connects Jamestown with Bemus Point has become like an old-fashioned “washboard” to drive on. It is especially bad on the south-bound lane between Fluvanna and Strunk Road.
At the area near the driveway for the War Vets, it becomes more like an obstacle course. You can stay out of potholes at first by hugging the shoulder of the road. Yet, down by the Fluvanna Community Church you almost have to drive in the center of the road to avoid the bumps. One day, I actually saw a car move all the way into the opposite lane trying to find smooth pavement. (Fortunately, there were no cars coming in the opposite direction.)
You think you have gotten through the worst of it as you approach Strunk Road and the entrance to the expressway. But, even there, if you move to the right lane, you have to dodge more holes in the pavement as you try to navigate back into the south-bound lane after the intersection.
This is not a town or county road. This is a New York State highay (also named the Senator Jess J. Present Memorial Highway.). Since we in New York state live in one of the highest taxed states in the country, you would think that we should get something for it … at least a decent road to drive on!
