Chautauqua Adult Day Services received a grant from Cummins Engine, Sheldon Foundation and the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation for its Outdoor Therapeutic Gardening and Recreation Project.

The project is providing participants in the program with the opportunity to be outside, do some gardening and participate in fun interactive activities on an ongoing basis. Outdoor furniture, two handicapped raised bed gardens and a greenhouse were purchased with the grant.

The project will enhance the quality of the program and provide additional socialization and therapeutic social interaction. The agency was also able to install fencing and a gate with a lock to provide a safe and secure outdoor area. Accessible gardening has enabled vegetables to be grown by the older adults and provide healthy food for the program.

Also, participants from other agency sites can visit and partake in outdoor activities as well and it can be used for intergenerational programming with local schools, providing an interactive and healthy opportunity for individuals to have fun and quality programming.

Chautauqua Adult Day Services, offers senior day programs for adults 60 years of age and older who live in community. The day programs enable seniors to have quality of life through socialization and activity programming. The sites provide breakfast and a hot noon time meal for participants. There is also a community recreation program that helps persons participate in outings in the community and the sites offer pet therapy, ceramics, music programs, arts and crafts and much more on an ongoing basis.
