After School Fun: After School Program Provides Washington Students With Community, Growth

Washington Middle School’s after school program has provided students with an opportunity to have fun and extend their learning in engaging ways after the school day.
For many Washington Middle School students, the learning doesn’t stop when the final bell rings.
Introduced last school year, Washington’s After School Program has transformed into a vibrant hub where academics, creativity, and community intersect. Led by paraprofessional Marianne Covert, who serves as the program’s coordinator, the program provides students a “safe, supportive, and engaging environment beyond the school day.”
“We offer a mix of academic support, enrichment activities, and social development opportunities,” Covert said. “Students can receive homework help, engage in art and literacy activities, and participate in team-building activities. These opportunities are especially important because they give students additional time to grow academically and socially in a structured environment.”
The diversity of programming available this year has allowed students to explore a wide range of interests that often go beyond the traditional classroom curriculum. Participants have engaged in YMCA swimming lessons, a fitness club, martial arts/karate, Chautauqua Striders athletics, collaboration with Infinity Performing Arts Center, and a LEGO club.
“In addition to enrichment and recreation, we also provide dedicated time for homework help and math tutoring so students can strengthen their academic skills in a supportive setting,” Covert says. “We are also proud to partner with community organizations such as Prevention Works and Chautauqua Striders.”

Family engagement is another essential pillar of the program’s success. The program hosts family nights that invite parents and guardians into the building to participate in activities alongside their children. One special event was a Family Night during the holidays which brought participants and their families together to which Covert says “featured festive Christmas carols, karaoke sing-along, and board game activities that brought families and staff together.”
For Covert, the most rewarding aspect of the program is witnessing the personal transformations that occur when the pressure of the formal school day is lifted.
“One of the most rewarding parts of working in the after-school setting is seeing students in a different light than during the regular school day,” she shares. “They often open up more, try new things, and build friendships across grade levels. It’s wonderful to watch their confidence grow as they discover new interests and strengths.”
Ultimately, the program’s mission is to foster a sense of belonging that extends into all areas of a student’s life.
“Our after-school program plays an important role in supporting the whole child,” Covert says. “We focus not only on academics, but also on social skills, teamwork, creativity, and building positive relationships with peers and staff. It truly becomes a community where students feel valued and supported.”
