Health And Safety Are No. 1 Priority

JPS Coordinator of Health Services, Dr. Jill Muntz DNP, FNP-C, demonstrates a temperature check with a non-contact, infrared thermometer. All students who attend in-person will have a temperature check daily upon arrival before entering school and prior to boarding a school bus.

“We know that school buildings must be safe places in order for our students to learn effectively,” said JPS Chief Director of Schools Tina Sandstrom. “Safe and healthy schools are not only critical to the education children receive, but also to the teachers and staff who deliver that high-quality education. Students and families will see an increase to the health and safety measures put in place in the Jamestown schools to combat the effects of COVID-19.”

SOCIAL DISTANCING

JPS understands that physical distancing does not come naturally or easily to students or adults. While it can be difficult, maintaining a physical distance of six feet is crucial to stopping the spread of COVID-19. Students and staff will be expected to practice six-feet social distancing from their arrival at schools through departure.

FACE MASKS

We all know that wearing facemasks slows the spread of COVID-19. All students, staff and visitors must wear face coverings when in any school building, at the bus stop, on the bus and while waiting outside before and after school. Face coverings can only be removed while eating and drinking during assigned breakfast/lunch/snack periods or during “mask breaks” as directed by a teacher or school administrator. For more information on facemasks see our flyer at www.jpsny.org/facemasks.

TEMPERATURE CHECKS

Students and staff must perform daily health screenings at home before coming into any Jamestown school. More information on daily health screenings can be found at www.jpsny.org/dailyscreening.

–If a student or staff member exhibits any COVID-19 symptoms (cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever or chills, muscle or body aches, vomiting or diarrhea, new loss of taste or smell or has a temperature of 100F or greater, they must stay home from school.

–All employees and visitors must complete a COVID-19 daily screening questionnaire prior to entering school buildings. Copies of the screening questionnaire will be available at each school for visitors and on-line for employees to complete prior to entering schools.

–In addition, all students who attend in-person will have non-contact infrared temperature check daily upon arrival at school and all students who ride a school bus must have a temperature check before boarding the bus. To motorists: please be aware that the bus screenings may take a few minutes more than normal for children to board and to continue to obey all flashing red lights for traffic to stop both ways. All students and staff will be monitored throughout the day for COVID-19 symptoms.

Additional Hand Sanitizing Stations & Hand washing Opportunities

–All schools are outfitted with additional hand sanitizing stations that are readily accessible at school entrances and in common areas.

–Frequent hand washing breaks will occur throughout the day and at specific times, such as before and after meals, to ensure that everyone is contributing to a healthy environment.

CLEANING, DISINFECTING

JPS has implemented recommended cleaning and disinfecting protocols, based on the current recommendations by the CDC and NYS Education Department, to ensure that we maintain a safe environment for our staff, students and visitors and help limit the spread of COVID-19.

–Classroom desks and other surfaces will be cleaned after each learning session. In addition to cleaning that may be required during the school day, each learning space will be thoroughly cleaned at the end of each school day.

–Cleaning and disinfecting of high touch surfaces, specifically for preventing the spread of this virus will occur throughout the day in areas such as: bathrooms, water coolers, desks, shared phones, countertops, doorknobs, faucet handles, bus seats and handrails.

–The custodial staff will be required to make continuous cleaning rounds throughout the day to check all locations in the building and clean additionally as required.

A cleaning log will be posted in each of the spaces utilized, showing the date and time of the cleaning operations

As all students in the district will be learning remotely on Friday, this will also allow for deep cleaning and sanitizing of classrooms and schools.
