Bush Students Learn STEAM With Lego Robotics

Bush Elementary School fourth grade teacher, Tiffany MacCullum, helped kindergartner, Josiah Perez, create a car in the after school Robotics Club.

“So, we are going to follow instructions in the book to build our Lego car,” said Bush Elementary School teacher Tiffany MacCullum to kindergartners in the After School Robotics Club. “We don’t want to guess, we want to open the book and follow the directions.”

Mrs. MacCallum helped kindergartners build a car during the bi-weekly Robotics Club during the hour-long class. She teaches four different age groups: kindergartners, first graders, second graders and third and fourth grade together. The Lego Education Robotics sets are geared to the different age groups with the sets starting very simply and building up to full robotics with moving parts.

“I like playing with Legos and building stuff like cars,” said Bush Elementary School kindergartner Alexander Mien.

The Lego Robotics really engage the students,” said Mrs. MacCullum. “But they also learn valuable skills like following instructions, manipulating parts and differentiating between long vs. short at the youngest ages. As they progress, older students learn about the process of building something, problem solving, teamwork and the satisfaction of creating something from scratch. I have heard students ask their parents to not pick them up from the after school program until they are done with Robotics Club. That is how much they want to do this class.”
