Oh! That Candy

We all know what candy corn is so what, beyond wanting to salute this Halloween treat, is there to say? OK - the 30th is National Candy Corn Day.Predictably, I turn to the internet and am immediately waylaid into a serious detour.Internet: do I cap it or not? The source itself tells me that last April the Powers-that-be decided it - and web - were so common they no longer merited the capital I. (Then along comes TIME with their cover story on the Internet, usage they continued throughout.) I'll opt for the small letter and save one editor some work.Which isn't at all what I wanted to ...

One Color Of Fall Is Orange

These days as you look around when you shop you are bombarded with the color orange. No, it is not in fashion this year, but there are pumpkins everywhere getting ready to be carved for Halloween and for those autumn decorations. When my grandson was young his father started him on a pumpkin raising business. People were eager to help the little guy's college fund out. One year the pumpkins were planted in the field directly behind the farm house at Meldick Farms. That year there was a bumper crop. One Saturday we all headed to the pumpkin patch to help with the harvesting. My son had a ...

Writer Gets Her Kicks On Route 66: Part Nine

Editor's Note: This is the ninth column in a series featuring the author's travels along Route 66.If you're just now joining me, my husband and I have been traveling for 16 days and approximately 1,800 miles on Historic Route 66. You've missed a lot, but there is still a lot to see."Well, I'm a standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona such a fine sight to see. It's a girl, my lord, in a flat-bed Ford" Need I say more? Since it had been less than four months since the death of Eagles' lead singer Glenn Frey, there were flowers at the foot of the Standing on a Corner statue located at ...

In And Out Of Season, Chautauqua

Off season, Chautauqua Institution takes on a new life. The streets are quiet. One can drive the lovely lanes and the lake road and see almost no one. The lucky annual residents must revel in their great good luck to live in a place so beautiful every turn looks like a movie scene. I love Chautauqua for so many good reasons - it helped educate me. It introduced me to authors, artists and musicians I would never have met. It exposed me to a community and a culture where beauty and learning are held in esteem. It offered some of the best Sunday sermons of my life. It brought together ...

Full Collapse Of Emotions

I remembered feeling silly last week standing there on East Second Street staring at that building that had partially collapsed. Half the building had simply fallen into itself. I guess that's what buildings do sometimes.Yet I was fascinated by it, like many others apparently were as evident by the throngs of people who just stood there in amazement. I joked to Jason Sample, the public affairs director for WRFA who briefly came by, that someone should be selling hotdogs as if at a sporting event. It's odd how something like that can draw a lot of people together. But then again, a ...
