Debra Eck Featured Artist In Sherman Art Gallery Exhibit

A local artist will showcase 10 years’ worth of work in an exhibit to open this weekend at a Sherman art gallery.

The LMNOP Gallery, 108 W. Main St. in Sherman, has announced that it will kick off its 2017 events calendar Friday with an exhibit and opening reception entitled “Palimpsest: What Lies Beneath; A Decade of Paper, Thread, and Text” by Debra Eck. The exhibit opening will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will feature a presentation by Eck alongside a refreshment reception throughout the course of the day.

Eck is a British-born, internationally exhibited mixed media artist whose work focuses on the lives and work of women using thread, paper and text. Her work finds expression in repetition, as most of her work requires tens, even hundreds, of hours of intensive hand labor to create. This meditative style of creativity allows for ideas to manifest fully and in different directions in an organic way.

“I enjoy the slow, unfolding process that took place when creating these pieces, as the threads of thought untangle and re-weave themselves into new forms; where the pattern is variously occupied, and the gallery space, which has been infiltrated by the pattern, occupies everything it touches,” Eck said.

Eck is a SUNY distinguished adjunct who teaches at Jamestown Community College and SUNY Fredonia, as well as at workshops in book arts across the U.S. She is also the curator of the 3rd on 3rd Gallery in the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts, and is the founder and creative co-director of the Women Create Biennial in Western New York. She has been recognized by both the Zonta Club and the YWCA for her contributions to the arts and her support of women artists in her community.

“I have been thinking about how work and women are historically connected, especially with the uneasy space occupied by women’s handicrafts in the art world,” she said.

The opening for “Palimpsest: What Lies Beneath,” will commence the LMNOP Gallery season but the installation will continue until April 29. Information regarding this show, or any other shows scheduled for the 2017 season, can be found at “LMNOP” on Facebook, by emailing lmnop108main@gmail.com or by calling 234-4010.
