Wind Of Change

As October is finally coming to a close, I’m going to attempt something I haven’t attempted in a long while: actually partake in Halloween-oriented activities.

My girlfriend, who has a much more creative mind than I do, has convinced me that I should have a go at a holiday that so many of my peers seem to adore yet has always been lost on me.

Luckily, my limited sense of imagination at costuming doesn’t need to stretch too far, as we’ve already coordinated what we’re going to dress as: I a greaser and she a pink lady, a la “Grease.” This is fine by me, as I’ve always had a certain level of fascination for ’50s fashion and already own all of my accessories as it is (though I suspect I’ll have some difficulty finding satisfaction with my attempt at a ’50s hairstyle).

And since the true holiday falls on a Monday this year, we’ll have the opportunity to showcase our costumes on two separate occasions as we’re also anticipating heading downtown Saturday evening for the Halloween-themed dance party at Forte. Anybody who would care to come see my band play at Mojo’s starting around 10 that night may also catch me in an abridged version of my costume, likely sans leather jacket, before I head on out to the dance party.

On Monday, we’re planning to don the same outfits once again and hand out candy from our front porch, something that I can honestly say I’ve never done before in my entire life. I guess it’s never too late to try something new.

Life has thrown a lot of curveballs my way since this time last year, when I certainly could not have predicted my current set of circumstances and new outlook on a lot of life’s minutiae. I’m looking forward to making the most of what I’ve been given, and can’t help but wonder what is in store for me even just one year from now.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!

And now, here’s some of what you can expect to find in the area this week.

HIGHLIGHTS

‘Rolling Hills Radio’ To Feature Townes, Pierson In Live Taping Tonight: The seventh season of WRFA-LP 107.9 FM’s “Rolling Hills Radio” rolls on with the live taping of its 57th overall episode tonight. The regular radio program, which is held every year from September through May, features singer-songwriters from near and far. This evening’s episode will include performances by Heather Pierson and Leroy Townes beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Reg Lenna Studio Theater.

From New Orleans-style jazz and blues to rousing Americana and poignant folk narratives, Pierson’s memorable live performances feature her virtuosity on piano, her bell-tone vocals and her commanding yet playful stage presence while wielding a tenor banjo, melodica or acoustic guitar. Though she will perform solo on “Rolling Hills Radio,” she also fronts an acoustic trio that includes Davy Sturtevant on strings and cornet, and Shawn Nadeau on upright bass. Despite playing for many years, the Buffalo-based Townes will not only appear for the first time in Chautauqua County, but on a live radio program. He has performed with The Lonestars since 2005 and, unlike Pierson, is firmly rooted in a single genre of music: alt-country.

The episode’s live taping will begin at 6:30 p.m., but it will be preceded by a pre-taping reception, complete with drinks and mingling, known as “Rolling Happy Hour.” Doors for the reception open at 5:30 p.m. A meet and greet with the artists will be held following the taping. Tickets for the show are $10, and those interested in attending are encouraged to purchase tickets as far in advance as possible. For more information, call the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts box office at 484-7070 or visit reglenna.com. The Reg Lenna Studio Theater is located at 108 E. Third St. in Jamestown.

Infinity Jazz Series To Feature Marla Harris In Friday Performance: The Jazz Concert Series at the Infinity Arts Cafe will feature “An Evening with Marla Harris” at 7 p.m. Friday. Harris was the second Chautauqua Lake Idol vocal winner, and has been featured at Jazz Erie and in clubs throughout New York state. She will perform with keyboardist Steve Davis, along with Jed Thomson on drums and Cody Anderson on keyboard and trumpet. The quartet will play jazz standards with a modern twist, along with contemporary jazz with R&B stylings by Robert Glasper and Snarky Puppy. There will also be originals mixed into the set.

The concert is sponsored by the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, and is free and open to the public. For more information, call 664-0991 or visit infinityperformingarts.org.

Vikings Lake Lodge To Hold Saturday Halloween Party: The Vikings Lake Lodge, 4923 Route 430 in Maple Springs, will hold a special dinner dance “Spooktacular Halloween Party” on Saturday beginning at 9 p.m.

The party will feature special events and “spooky giveaways” all set to the sounds of DJs unlimited. A costume party will begin at 9 p.m., with many prizes to be awarded. The event is open to all area lodge members and their guests. For information on the party or becoming a new member, call the Vikings downtown office at 487-9305.

CRYB To Present ‘Dance Noir’ Saturday: The Chautauqua Regional Youth Ballet will present “Dance Noir” on Friday at the Willow Bay Theatre beginning at 8 p.m. The production will feature new choreography and small scale works as performed by dancers of the local youth ballet group. The program will include several original contemporary works and smaller scale ballet pieces, all with a dark- or masquerade-type feel. Original contemporary works include: “Garten” by Michael Cerwinski, a New York City-based guest teacher and guest choreographer for the Chautauqua Regional Youth Ballet; “In Trutina,” an excerpt from “Carmina Burana” as choreographed by Cerwinski for the youth ballet’s Spring Gala; and “Gypsy Suite” to music from “The Red Violin,” an original work created for the youth ballet by alumna Brittany Bush – who went on to receive a performance degree from the Conservatory of Dance at SUNY Purchase and currently lives in Boston, where she dances with the Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre. Other works to be performed include variations from “The Sleeping Beauty” – including “Red Riding Hood” and “The Wolf and Bluebirds” – “Letzter Tag” and “Soldato.” “Soldato” was choreographed by Dara Swisher and has been an audience favorite for many years.

Also available will be a cash wine bar, which will be open a half-hour before the performance at 7:30 p.m., and during intermission. Limited table seating is available for $15, and general seating is $10. General seating is available at the door. Tickets may be reserved by calling 664-9766. Visit the Chautauqua Regional Youth Ballet website at cryb.net for more information.

Reg Lenna To Host ‘Judgment At Nuremberg’ Show Sunday: The national theater tour of “Judgment at Nuremberg” will be presented at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts on Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. The live performance radio drama is presented by L.A. Theatre Works in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the original trials. The play will be performed in full costume with video productions, period furniture, music and live sound effects. Originally a teleplay, “Judgment at Nuremberg” became an Academy Award-winning film and a stage play by Abby Mann that is both surprising and unsettling. In this absorbing and complex drama, a cast of unforgettable characters play out their high stakes game against the backdrop of a looming Cold War, shifting political alliances, and the shocking and vivid memories of the Holocaust and World War II.

Tickets are on sale at Reg Lenna Center for The Arts box office, ranging in price from $5 to $35. Sales are also available by calling the box office at 484-7070 or visiting reglenna.com.

Boobe Sisters To Perform Series Of Chautauqua County Shows This Weekend: The Boobe Sisters, a Los Angeles based comedy trio featuring Cherry Creek native Karen Volpe, will begin a three-day run of concerts beginning Friday at Feegan’s Witch Kitch from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The 21-and-over concert is free, with no cover charge, and will feature Adam McKillip as a supporting act. There will also be a Halloween costume contest and giveaways throughout the evening. As the group has developed a reputation for its oftentimes bawdy 1960s-styled song parodies, the show has been given an “R” rating.

On Saturday, the group will perform a toned-down, “PG-13” version of its stage show in a special dinner theater event at Webb’s Captain’s Table Restaurant, 115 W. Lake Road in Mayville, from 7-10 p.m. The cost to attend is $49.95 and tickets can be reserved by calling 753-3960 or online at webbscaptainstable.com/events/2016/10/29/dinner-theater-boobe-sisters.

Finally, an all-ages concert intended for local high school drama and music students will be given at the Lucy-Desi Museum and Center for Comedy’s Tropicana Room from 4-5:45 p.m. on Sunday. The show itself will run for the first hour, and will be followed by a 45-minute question-and-answer session in which students can learn more about a career in showbusiness. Tickets are $10 for adults, but students who RSVP with karenvpreston@gmail.com before Saturday will be admitted free.
