JCA To Host Pianist Lara Downes In Nov. 4 Concert

The second installment of the Jamestown Concert Association’s 2016-17 season will feature a very familiar face.

Lara Downes, a California-based pianist and official Steinway recording artist, will make a return visit to Jamestown to perform at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Friday, Nov. 4 – her fourth appearance in the city courtesy of the concert association.

“This is the fourth time that we’ve had her, but the first time she came she was on her way from San Francisco to perform in New York City when she was very young,” said Sally Ulrich, Jamestown Concert Association board president. “She had contacted our former president, Richard Corbin, and he got her in here and she made an immediate bond with the audience. She’s turned into an area favorite and when you see her play the piano you can understand why. So, by public demand, we’ve had her in here about every four to six years.”

On this occasion, Downes will be supporting the release of her most recent album, “America Again,” which came out Friday. In her album, Downes explores music that expresses different facets of the American dream. She conceived the idea of the album in June 2015, in response to the Charleston, S.C., shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. She recorded the album in March 2016 at Sono Luminus’ studio in Boyce, Va.

Downes writes of the meaning in the album: “Today, as I write these words, we are living again in troubled times. For too many Americans, circumstance and skin color still keep the promise out of reach, the dream deferred. The hard-won rights and long-sought justice for which our parents and grandparents fought are too easily slipping away. The rifts and rivalries that divide us as a nation seem to run deeper than ever. But still, we dreamers keep dreaming our dream. This music is a tribute to the generations of Americans who dream the impossible: black and white, men and women, immigrants and pioneers. It tells the story of their journeys, their loves and longings, their hardships and their hopes. American music is made of everything we are, coming from so many different people and places, expressing so many different dreams.”

Ulrich said the program will primarily include selections from “America Again,” though other standards may be thrown into the mix. She said the concert is also a tribute to former Jamestown Concert Association board member Patricia “Pat” Phillips, who died in April. Ulrich said Downes had developed a bond with Pat, and her husband, James, as she would stay with the Jamestown couple while on her visits to the city.

Tickets to the concert are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors ages 65 and older, and $7.50 for college students. They can be purchased at the door, or presale at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts, Chautauqua Music, Germaine and Pappalardo, Trinity Guitars and Wright’s Music Shed, or by calling 484-7070 or 487-1522. Children under 18 will be admitted for free if accompanied by a paying adult. Parents who bring children will be admitted for a discounted price of $10.
