JCA Announces 2016-17 Season Lineup

With fall weather rapidly approaching, the Jamestown Concert Association is gearing up for a new season of hosting performances by classically trained, world-class musicians in the Jamestown area.

The 2016-17 season, which officially kicks off Friday, Oct. 21, will feature a monthly series of six concerts in total before wrapping up in May. According to Sally Ulrich, Jamestown Concert Association president, the theme of this year’s season is “Celebrate Amazing Music,” and revolves around the praise of music in a number of forms as a means of entertaining a wide and diverse audience.

“We’re looking forward to having something new for all people to enjoy, regardless of what appeals to them,” Ulrich said. “It’s our hope that some people, who never thought they could like classical music, might find that they actually do.”

The 2016-17 will commence with the Friday, Oct. 21, performance of Seraph Brass at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church beginning at 8 p.m. An all-female brass ensemble, the members of Seraph Brass have performed with esteemed outfits such as the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Musicians from Marlboro, the Luzern Music Festival in Switzerland, National Symphony, Brass Band of Battle Creek, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Daejeon Philharmonic in Korea and the Auckland Philharmonia in New Zealand. They currently hold positions in the Richmond Symphony, the Louisville Orchestra, Sarasota Opera Orchestra, the Artosphere Orchestra, New Chicago Brass, Tennessee Tech University and the University of Virginia. For more information on the group, visit seraphbrass.com.

The second concert will mark the return of pianist Lara Downes, who has previously performed in Jamestown courtesy of the Jamestown Concert Association, on Friday, Nov. 4. Born in San Francisco and raised in Europe, Downes’ solo recordings have met tremendous critical and popular acclaim. Her 2013 album “Exiles’ Cafe” topped the bestseller charts and 2014’s “Some Other Time” – which also featured cellist Zuill Bailey – debuted in the Billboard Top 10. Her recent chart-topping release, “A Billie Holiday Songbook,” has been embraced by both jazz and classical critics and listeners. Her live performances and recordings are heard regularly on national radio programs with features including “NPR Music,” “Marketplace,” “Performance Today,” Sirius XM “Symphony Hall,” WNYC’s “New Sounds” and WFMT’s “Impromptu.” For more information, visit laradownes.com.

The first half of the season will conclude with the Wednesday, Dec. 14, performance of “Poinsettia Pops” by the Western New York Chamber Orchestra. Headquartered in Fredonia, the ensemble is comprised of 15-40 members including faculty at the Fredonia School of Music at SUNY Fredonia and professional musicians from the Buffalo, Rochester and Erie areas. The Dec. 14 concert in Jamestown will feature friendly classics and holiday tunes at the height of the holiday season. For more information, visit wnyco.org.

The 2017 portion of the season will commence Friday, March 17, with a performance by the Celtic fiddle and guitar duo Dana and Kyle. Hailed as “ground-breaking” by noted folklorist and NEA Award-recipient Mick Moloney and “bursting with creativity” by renowned fiddler Kevin Burke, Dana Lyn and Kyle Sanna connect the dots between their experience as composers and improvisers in New York City’s rich musical community and their deep admiration for traditional Irish music. The two have collaborated with some of the greatest living interpreters of Irish music and have brought their inventive arrangements and nuanced interpretations of traditional music to clubs, festival stages and concert halls throughout the US and Canada. On Friday, April 22, the Jamestown Concert Association will host Percussion Group Cincinnati. The group was founded in 1979 by Allen Otte, James Culley and Russell Burge, all of whom are faculty members and ensemble-in-residence at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. The concert will showcase classic and experimental concert music from America, Chile, South Africa and China using a dynamic palette consisting of marimbas, drums, gongs, prepared piano, a computer, a deck of cards and more. It is also a culminating event in celebration of Earth Day. For more information, visit pgcinfo.com.

The final concert of the 2016-17 will be held Sunday, May 21, with a performance by the Buffalo Gay Men’s Chorus. Since 1999, the impressive dedication, hard work and unflagging efforts by the chorus singers, non-singing members and volunteers of the choir have resulted in its success. In March 2008, the choir received the prestigious Buffalo and Erie County Arts Council Award for exceptional contributions to the arts and cultural community in Western New York. Its greatest accomplishment has probably been its success in weaving the different lives and personalities of its members, and of the communities it serves, through the tug and magic of music sung from the heart. All concerts will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 410 N. Main St. in Jamestown, with the exception of the Dec. 14 Western New York Chamber Orchestra – which will be held at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts, 116 E. Third St. in Jamestown.
