Little Theatre To Stage ‘Jekyll And Hyde’ Next Month

An epic struggle between good and evil comes to Jamestown next month with the Lucille Ball Little Theatre’s upcoming production of “Jekyll and Hyde.”

The local theater company will present for the first time the hit Broadway musical, adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella of the same name, beginning with its opening night on Oct. 7.

“This is one of the more demanding productions we’ve done in recent history. It’s very different from our typical programming, but the play selection committee had seen the show and loved the music; so we decided we should try it,” said Helen Merrill, director. “We have the talent in this city to pull it off, and this is a musical that can really showcase that talent. The entire ensemble sounds really good, and I’m very pleased with the entire cast.”

Merrill said the production has provided a litany of challenges in nearly every department: from wardrobe to stage prop construction to lighting. Among the most difficult and unique of these challenges is a particular special effect in which the crew must light a dead body prop on fire, for which she said a special machine was purchased by the theater that should be able to make the effect appear believable to a viewing audience.

Other unconventional components requisite to the staging of the production include the use of fog machines to imitate foggy London streets, and the use of a chorus to mask the transitioning of scenes. Merrill also said the theater is renting from four different costuming companies, as well as recycling some pieces from its own wardrobe, to fulfill the demands of the costuming side of the production.

“It’s a challenge, but the cast has just been super and it’s coming together,” she said. “Even though it’s a bit of a darker show I think the people of Jamestown are going to leave here in awe of what they’ve just seen, and they’re going to be applauding the talent.”

The Little Theatre’s production of “Jekyll and Hyde” will be staged on: Friday, Oct. 7; Saturday, Oct. 8; Sunday, Oct. 9; Friday, Oct. 14; Saturday, Oct. 15; and Sunday, Oct. 16. The Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m., and the Sunday performances will begin at 2 p.m.
