Don’t Pass Me By
Within the dying days of summer was held a culminative event that provided a snapshot of all that is good about outdoor entertainment in Western New York.
With the slightest indication of changing leaves, little-to-no breeze and a clear sky that offered a magnificent view of the setting sun, the fifth season of the Third Thursday summer concert series was concluded with homegrown music and ample jubilation to celebrate the occasion.
As anyone who grew up or spent any fair amount of time in this area knows, winters around these parts tend to be unflinchingly brutal and harsh. Bitter cold temperatures and typically excessive amounts of snowfall have a propensity for being a bit of a killjoy for those of us who prefer tolerable weather conditions and doing, you know, anything outside. (As a side note, I can respect the resourcefulness of those who love the winter season, be it for sports or any other recreational activities, but you’re never going to convince me of your ways.)
So it stands to reason, as the days are growing shorter and the temperatures are beginning to dip below 60 again, that events such as this one can encapsulate not only all the good that can come out of the summer and early fall seasons but the feeling that perhaps we should be more attentive to what it represents: joy, talent and ability in an often tepid climate (weather, economic, etc.).
There are a lot of happenings around us for which we can be thankful and of which we can take for granted. It all depends on one’s perspective. But maybe the most important thing to recognize is that these things are available, and it’s up to us to seek them out.
As Bilbo Baggins said of his unexpected journey: “The road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began.” I certainly have had few such interactions and experiences of any lasting impact that didn’t begin with stepping outside the machinery and drudgery of my daily routine. You have to be willing to take chances, and accept that they may or may not be all you’d hoped for.
As it is, it’s a risk I’ve always been willing to take; particularly when I know that Mother Nature is likely going to become rather moody in the not-so-distant future.
And now, here’s some of what you can expect to find in the area this week.

Reg Lenna To Host Sprout Film Festival Friday: The Resource Center, in partnership with the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts, will bring a handful of short, independent films to the Jamestown theater Friday from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in its second annual presentation of the touring Sprout Film Festival. The purpose of the event is to bring about general public awareness of the personalities, characteristics and overall humanity of those struggling with a disability. The Sprout Film Festival was founded in 2003 and is programmed and supported by Sprout, a New York City-based nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing innovative programming to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. After roughly a decade of successful events, the festival then began to introduce a touring component in which agencies could customize their own private, on-site screenings by selecting from a pool which specific films would be shown at their events. The event is free and open to the public.
The Reg Lenna Center for the Arts is located at 116 E. Third St. in Jamestown. For more information on Friday’s event, call The Resource Center at 485-4641, visit resourcecenter.org/sprout/ or find the event on Facebook.
