Hello Hurricane

It may seem ludicrous to say after all the recent writing I’ve done about my extensive gigging in the past months, but I’m heading into busy season now.

I’ve been told I have no small delusion when it comes to my definition of the word “busy,” but to me it’s just the natural flow of life. Regardless, the next month will probably be the most hectic and fulfilling of the year in terms of the nature of my shows.

It all starts next weekend with the Aug. 19-20 return of the Brokenstring Music Festival at the Brokenstraw Fish and Game Club in Youngsville, Pa., a venue I’ve elaborated on in this column over the past two years. Just a quick recap: the Brokenstring is an annual festival comprised of primarily Warren-, Youngsville- and Pittsburgh-oriented bands that I look forward to immensely each August. It has a special place in the hearts of myself and my fellow bandmates in The Elektra Kings, as we were the first band to kick off the first night of performances at the first Brokenstring festival back in 2012.

We’ve had much success there, as we’re always well-received and feel utterly in our element. The support is unwavering. This year I’m looking forward to it even more since our performance will directly precede that of my friends in Smackdab, who will headline this year’s festival. Being that Smackdab is a Jamestown band and will undoubtedly bring a large contingent of local people down to the festival, I’m predicting Saturday evening of this year’s event to be a combination of my Pennsylvania and New York peers in equal measure.

Truthfully, I welcome the notion as even more enticing than a typical Brokenstring show. It should be nothing short of amazing.

The excitement will continue into September, when the Kings will once again take part in the Infinity Visual and Performing Arts’ annual Local Music Showcase. This is always another evening of guaranteed annual jubilation, as the city of Jamestown consistently turns out to support the showcase and its dozens of live acts that will be playing throughout the evening.

This year’s showcase will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, and we’ll be playing at Mojo’s among the likes of Blood Feud, Bryan Moore and DirtTrackRacing, The Audience (Smackdab’s “ugly cousin,” according to guitarist Matt Baxter) and, once again, Smackdab.

Later that very week, we’ll be at the Wintergarden Plaza, adjacent to the Wine Cellar, to close out this year’s Third Thursday concert series on Thursday, Sept. 15. We’ll open for The Audience, which I’m more than excited about, and we’ll have the added bonus of a primetime Buffalo Bills game being played during the latter portion of the concert – which should be able to be viewed from the TV on the Wine Cellar’s outdoor patio. It’s more entertainment than I can handle!

As of now it all seems so distant as I sit with anticipation. However, things will be kicking off before I know it and then I suspect there will be little time for thinking.

Just another great series of additions to this reporter-musician’s growing resume of live performances. I can’t wait!

And now, here’s some of what you can expect to find in the area this week.

HIGHLIGHTS

Butch Trucks, Freight Train Band To Perform Aboard Chautauqua Belle Saturday: The 2016 Belle Bash summer concert series is set to conclude with a Saturday performance by Butch Trucks and the Freight Train Band. A founding member of the legendary Allman Brothers Band, Trucks performed on drums with the group throughout its on and off existence from its 1969 inception until it officially disbanded in 2014. A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 1995 inductee, Trucks is now touring with musicians of the next generation to bring the energy typical of an Allman Brothers Band concert to audiences nationwide.

In addition to Trucks, the band consists of: Berry Oakley Jr., son of Allman Brothers Band founding member Berry Oakley, on bass and vocals; Damon Fowler on guitar and vocals; Bruce Katz on keyboards; and Heather Gillis on guitar and vocals. Trucks said he is not trying to reinvent the wheel with the Freight Train Band, but rather continue to enjoy the thing that he enjoys most: playing drums. Boarding for the concert begins at 7 p.m. at the Chautauqua Belle’s docking site at 78 Water St. in Mayville, adjacent to Lakeside Park. The approximately three-hour concert will begin at 8 p.m., and is limited to only 100 seats.

Tickets are $65 and are available at 269belle.com, via the “Belle Bash” tab, or by finding the event on Facebook and following the online link.
