Celtic Traditions
MAYVILLE – On Friday, more than 20 Celtic clans will be at Lakeside Park in Mayville for the 10th annual Jamestown Regional Celtic Festival.
According to Doug Clark, event coordinator, he and William MacLaughlin started the festival in 2006. The 96th Highlanders Pipes & Dreams Inc. will be bringing in clans from all over New York, Ohio and Canada. The 96th Highlanders are the only bagpipe band in North America that actually organizes their own Celtic Festival.
The annual event will start Friday from 6-10 p.m. and run through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The family-friendly festival will feature Celtic traditions, music and foods for all to enjoy.
There will be over 30 vendors featuring Celtic items, local crafts and food including fish and chips, meat pies, hamburgers, fried dough and a chicken barbecue, among others. The beer and wine garden will feature Guinness, Bud Light, Smethwick’s and wine from Merritt Estate Winery.
The Buffalo Heavies Kilted Throwing Club will facilitate athletic events on Saturday. Thirty-two athletes from amateur to professional levels will showcase their talents and strength in six events: open stone throw, weight throw for distance, Scottish hammer throw, caber toss, sheaf toss and weight toss. Each competitor will have three attempts to achieve his personal best. There will be a winner in each event and an overall winner.
Several Celtic bands will take to the stage during the weekend, with Celtic Circle Ceilidh Band playing the kick-off party from 6-10 p.m. on Friday. The band is based out of Youngstown. McCarthyizm will kick off Saturday at 11:30 a.m., followed by Penny Whiskey at 3 p.m. Both bands are from Buffalo. Rounding out the evening is Big Leg Emma, who will play from 7-10 p.m.
Since its inception, the festival has grown in size. According to Clark, the event drew 600 attendees when the festival began. Last year, nearly 4,000 attended the festival and if numbers hold true, the number could very well exceed last year’s total.
The list of pipe bands participating in the 10th annual Jamestown Regional Celtic Festival are: Niagara Regional Police Pipe Band, from Niagara Falls, Canada; The City of Thorold Pipe Band, from Ontario, Canada; The MacKenzie Highlanders Pipe Band from Niagara Falls; The Caledonian Pipe & Drums, from Buffalo; Gordon Highlanders, from Buffalo; Lochaber Pipe Band, from Lorain, Ohio; the Red Hackle Pipe Band, from Cleveland, Ohio and the 96th Highlanders Pipes & Drums, from Jamestown.
