Razzer’s Jazzers To Play At Chautauqua

CHAUTAUQUA – Ralph “Razz” Rasmusson, veteran of the local music scene, will be bringing his group, Razzer’s Jazzers, to the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater on Aug. 24 for a night of dixie jazz.

Rasmusson, who plays clarinet, has been a fixture of the Western New York jazz scene for years, having played in a number of groups throughout the area, including Razz and Friends and Southern Fried Jazz. He is also currently a jazz instructor at Jamestown Community College.

For Rasmusson’s first performance at the amphitheater, he assembled a band made up of talented musicians from around the country. Perhaps most well-known is the group’s piano player, Tom Roberts, whose work can be heard in the soundtrack to the 2004 film,” The Aviator,” and who performed at Carnegie Hall and on “The Johnny Carson Show.” Roberts specializes in various styles of early jazz, and is a frequent guest on National Public Radio.

Also playing in Razzer’s Jazzers are trombonist Pete Pepke of Tidioute, Pa., who has performed at the Winter Olympics in Oslow, Sweden, the 2010 Super Bowl and many European traditional jazz festivals; trumpeter Jon Mathis of Baltimore, Md., who has performed with a number of jazz groups in the Baltimore area; bass and tuba player Jay Miles, who has had an extensive career playing the club circuit in Las Vegas and California; and drummer Alan Dale, who is currently based in Las Vegas.

In forming the band, Rasmusson drew from the extensive network of musicians he has built during his many years of performing to assemble a group with extensive knowledge and experience playing the traditional American style of jazz known as “Dixieland,” a distinctively Southern style which first developed in New Orleans at the beginning of the 20th century and was later popularized by artists such as Louis Armstrong as it spread to Chicago and New York City in the 1910s.

Rasmusson has played with the members of this new group several times in the past, but their upcoming show at Chautauqua Institution will mark their debut as Razzer’s Jazzers. This performance will also mark the end of the season at the institution, as it will be the final performance held at the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater.

The performance will take place on Sunday, Aug. 24, at 2:30 p.m. at the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater. Admission to the grounds and amphitheater is free on Sundays, although purchase of a parking pass is required after 1:30 p.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
