Fredonia Opera House Sets ‘Land Riot!’

The Holland Land Company vault.

FREDONIA — The 1891 Fredonia Opera House will present “Land Riot!” as the sixth talk in its 2019 Chautauqua County History Lecture Series on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Dick Waite, a Western New York historian, will give the illustrated lecture, which replaces the previously scheduled History of Findley Lake, now to be presented in a future series.

Many Chautauqua County residents have viewed the arched stone vault which sits on the front lawn of the Chautauqua County Courthouse in Mayville. The vault was built by William Peacock, local agent of the Holland Land Company, who came to Mayville in 1810. In this vault were kept the records of the land company until 1835. Waite’s discussion will include information about the structure and how it came to remain on the site.

Admission to the presentation is free, with donations accepted.

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House is a member-supported not-for-profit organization located in Village Hall in Fredonia. A complete schedule of Opera House events is available at fredopera.org.
