GWAR Scheduled To Play In Buffalo Oct. 3

When founder and lead scumdog, Oderus Urungus, disappeared into another plane of existence, many thought the tribe of space and time travelers known as GWAR were going to fade into the annals of musical history. Fortunately for metalheads around the world, that has not been the case.

New frontman and leader of the band of galactic misfits, Berserker Blothar, said the cold weather that is usually in place around the time of the next scheduled visit of the scumdogs of the universe to the Buffalo area is nothing for GWAR.

“Look, you have to remember that we were entombed in an icy crypt in Antarctica for a long time before this whole thing started,” Blothar said. “Western New York winters are nothing for us. Look, the only place that compares is Mile High (Staidum) in Denver, and who wants to go there?”

Blothar was awakened to the sound of his phone ringing in the ice of his Antarctic man cave, he said, and it was legendary.

“Like the legendary Beowulf, I accepted and rose to the challenge to lead this band of misfits,” Blothar said. “I would like to say that I immediately became the leader but, well, it was a period of toleration from the band.”

Since the time of Odorous, and when Blothar’s spirit was dwelling in bassist, Beefcake the Mighty, things have changed, he said. And he is not impressed. Let’s face it. Impressing an intergalactic berserker is not an easy task anyway.

“Look, tech changed things, and not for the better,” Blothar said. “Nothing is as good as it once was. You know, I swear, the older I get the worse the world gets. Nowadays, everything is digital. It used to be that we had to commit crimes live, and now it is all digital. It’s easier but you know what? Easier sucks.”

For those that have no idea who, or what, GWAR is, it really boils down to what GWAR started as, and Blothar has been there since the start, if only in spirit.

“Well, GWAR started as an intergalactic punk band playing metal because it was fun,” he said. “It’s really quite ironic. Metal is actually the music GWAR felt the most at home playing.”

So, you’ve heard GWAR. You have an expectation of the music and stage, but just what doe this new incarnation of GWAR bring that you need to truly expect?

“Well, it is a nonstop parade of murderous chaos from before the first note,” Blothar said, adding that he expects the slave pit will be in full force during this show. “While I can’t really tell you how far it is, but those in reach really need to be prepared to be hosed down with the most foul of liquids. Oh, and we have been told that there will be a special guest or two that will make an appearance. Lots of people are going to die.”

This isn’t the first time GWAR has been through the region, and Blothar’s spirit has been through before. When asked about his favorite things about Western New York, he had an answer right away.

“You know, you guys up there in New York have one thing going for you. That’s really it. You have the BEST truck stops,” Blothar said. “Oh, and grapes. I want everyone that comes to the show to bring lots and lots of Niagara grapes. It really is a beautiful region. But bring the grapes to the show. I love Niagara grapes!”

GWAR plays the Town Ballroom Oct. 3 with Hatebreed.
