A yearly benefit for those who take to the skies to save lives is slated for next week.

The third annual “Starflight, Starry Night” fundraising event will be held Saturday, May 12, at the Chautauqua Suites, located at 215 West Lake Road in Mayville, starting at 6 p.m.

The fundraiser and awareness event, which aims to raise money for Starflight and its lifesaving transport service, will include dinner, entertainment and a number of other activities. The public is invited to attend, and all proceeds will benefit the Starflight program.

The evening will include remarks from Betsy Wright, Starflight program president; state Sen. Cathy Young; David Thomas, executive director of WCA Services Corporation; and Sheriff Joseph Gerace, Starflight program board member.

“The Starflight program plays a vital role in our ability to get the most critical patients to specialty tertiary centers in time to save their lives,” Wright said. “We are indebted to the specialized physicians, medevac flight crew, health care specialists, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department, WCA Services Corporation staff, and civic and governmental representatives who have shaped this program into one of the finest medevac services in this region.”

During the event, guests will be treated to a social hour starting at 6 p.m. which will include live entertainment by The Party Squad and Jamestown Harmony Express. Hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and a gourmet dinner will be provided. Other highlights of the evening include a silent auction, giveaways and a helicopter appearance — weather permitting.

New to this year’s event will be the presentation of the first annual Starflight EMS Agency of the Year award, which will go to the Chautauqua Fire Department. This award is presented to an EMS agency that has shown commitment to emergency services and support of Starflight’s lifesaving mission. In 2017, Chautauqua Fire Department participated in 331 calls, with 218 of those calls being EMS related.
