When Day And Dream Unite
This weekend I’ll be able to scratch off a bucket-list item in my playing career.
It might sound kind of silly, but it’s been a longtime desire of mine to play at Shawbucks in Jamestown; ever since I was a kid and my parents would drive me past the big building with the bright neon guitar adorning the side.
On Saturday, that desire will be fulfilled. Cold Lazarus is going to make our (and my personal) live debut at the 212 W. Second St. establishment, and we’ll have an entire evening to play some of our earliest and more recent original material. The show starts at approximately 10 p.m. and will go all the way until close.
Technically I have played Shawbucks once before — with The Elektra Kings in the 2015 Local Music Showcase. But I don’t deem it as an official gig because it wasn’t one that I had personally booked. This time around, I took it upon myself to go through the proper channels to get my own band on that stage; and it worked!
What makes it even better is that the band is building up a bit of a local following and it seems, thus far, that we may expect a decent crowd turn out for us as long as those who’ve RSVP’d actually show. I hesitate to use the word “following” since I’m not accustomed to being in a band that has one of those, but I can let the audiences we’ve seen in our 11-month existence speak for themselves.
We must be doing something right, because people respond on social media and when they see us live. Regardless, I’m looking forward to being able to play another hometown show; this time against a different backdrop.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved every show I’ve played at Mojo’s. There’s something about the atmosphere in that bar that, as a performer, has been difficult to match at any other venue in the immediate vicinity. But the stage does sometime get cramped, and the room, with its brick walls predominantly lacking sound-dampening material, wasn’t necessarily designed for live music. At least not the kind of live music that it hosts every weekend; not that I’m complaining, in the least.
I’m not entirely sure what to expect from the Shawbucks show this weekend, but I do know that I’m going to enjoy making use of some extra space both on and off the stage. Not only that, but the bar is much more voluminous and offers much more seating for people who want to come out and see the show.
I know that it’s going to be a lot easier to see who isn’t there at Shawbucks than it would be at Mojo’s (i.e. it’s a lot more difficult to fill the former than the latter) but I am glad for the number of affirmative responses from those I’ve personally invited. I’m even more so curious to see just how much of the dance floor we can occupy.
It might be a lot, and it might be a little. But at least I’m finally playing Shawbucks, and I’m glad to be doing it with my Cold Lazarus brethren. There’s never a dull moment when I’m around those guys.
Anyway, if you’re so inclined, come and check us out. I think it’s going to be quite a good time. (Also, the Bills don’t play until 4 on Sunday, so there’s extra time to sleep in!)
And now, here’s some of what you can expect to find in the area this week.

Struthers To Host Ozzy Osborne Tribute Concert Saturday: The Struthers Library Theatre in Warren, Pa., will host a tribute to Ozzy Osborne with a concert by The Land of Ozz on Saturday at 8 p.m. At the center of The Land of Ozz is Stephen Desko, who’s ability to recreate the look and sound of the former Black Sabbath frontman will make you think you are hearing and seeing Ozzy live in the ’80s and ’90s. To create an accurate and worthwhile tribute to Ozzy, Desko has employed 17-year-old guitar prodigy Matt Stanley. Matt recreates the exact note-for-note leads and guitar sounds that are such a huge part of Ozzy’s songs with the same feel and technique as Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde. The rest of The Land of Ozz consists of professional musicians Mike Stanley, Matt’s father, on rhythm guitar; co-founder of Get The Led Out, Paul Piccari, on bass; Tommy “Stewart” Staszewski on drums; and on keyboards, Mike “Viv” Vivial. The Land of Ozz focuses on the classic Randy Rhoads-era of the “Blizzard of Ozz” and “Diary of a Madman” albums, as well as some gems from the later Ozzy periods and even a few Black Sabbath tunes.
Tickets to the concert are $20, and reserved seating is available. They can be purchased by calling 814-489-3110 or from the theater box office or Virg-Ann Flower Shop.
The Struthers Library Theater is located at 302 W. Third St. in Warren, Pa. For more information visit strutherslibrarytheatre.com.
