Motown Sound
WRIGHTSVILLE, Pa. – Area residents searching for an authentic ’60s sound need look no further than The Contours’ upcoming performance at the White Swan Ballroom in Wrightsville, Pa.
The Contours, one of Motown’s earliest signings, will make a special appearance at the Wrightsville venue at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, as part of a 2015 tour commemorating the group’s 55th anniversary.
Perhaps best known for its 1962 hit single “Do You Love Me,” the group maintained a successful string of chart-topping songs throughout the rest of the 1960s before experiencing resurgences in the ensuing decades through the modern day. In its heyday, the group achieved many milestones, particularly through the immense success of “Do You Love Me” – which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 2 on the rhythm and blues charts and No. 3 on the pop charts. The song remained on the charts for five months after its release, sold more than one million copies and holds the record as Motown’s fastest rising hit of all time.
In 1963, the group charted another hit, “Shake Sherry,” which rose to No. 21 on the charts. This was followed in successive years by “Can You Do It” in 1964, and “Can You Jerk Like Me,” “The Day When She Needed Me” and “First I Look at the Purse” in 1965. Following a handful of lineup changes in the late ’60s, the group had dissolved by 1970, but was reformed in the early 1970s by original founding member Joe Billingslea.
The group experienced a resurgence in 1987 when “Do You Love Me” was prominently featured in the film “Dirty Dancing.” The song again entered the music charts as a result of its appearance in the film, peaking at No. 11 and holding that spot for eight weeks. As a result, the band partook in a “Dirty Dancing Concert Tour,” which also featured other artists featured in the movie and reached eight countries and 2 million fans in 10 months.
Through its various releases, “Do You Love Me” has sold more than 10 million copies. A number of “Dirty Dancing” themed releases and compilations have also been released. The group’s most recent album, “Dance with the Contours” was released in 2011.
