SALAMANCA — Falconer/Cassadaga Valley wrestling left the mats of the Southern Tier Wrestling Officials Association Holiday Classic Tournament with its second team title in as many years on Saturday after finishing with 200 points to edge Tioga (195.5) and Port Allegany, Pa. (183.5) at the Allegany Community Center.

Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Westfield grabbed sixth overall (132), Maple Grove was 12th (57), Randolph placed 13th (56) while Fredonia finished with 45 points, Franklinville 42, Southwestern 42, Cattaraugus-Little Valley 34 and Frewsburg 23.

Justin McDougald of Niagara Wheatfield was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler, finishing his weekend with a 4-2 decision over John Worthing of Tioga to take home the 138-pound title.

The Golden Falcons claimed one individual title thanks to Robbie Penhollow’s first period win via fall over Nick Marsh of Frewsburg at 182 pounds, but they did enough across their roster to leave with another championship.

“The top five teams were all neck-and-neck most of the weekend here and I think we got a little lucky towards the end there to finish on top, but we’ll take it,” said Falconer/Cassadaga Valley coach Drew Wilcox.

Penhollow had little trouble throughout the weekend on his way to a pin of Marsh in 1:19.

“Earlier I got in on that single leg and wasn’t able to finish from out of bounds,” said the senior.

He added: “I knew it was there, so I just had to set it up in the middle of the mat, and then once I got on top I was pretty confident I was going to be able to turn him.”

In one of the closest finals of the day, Sam Grey of Cattaraugus-Little Valley picked up a narrow 5-4 decision over Dakota Mascho of Portville to take home the 152-pound title.

Shooting for single-leg takedowns early and often, Grey secured his win with a third-period reversal at the mat edge before holding off Mascho in the final moments.

“The biggest surprise during the match was it got super tight super quick and I had to fight out of it,” said Grey, who picked up a win against the Portville freshman just a week prior. “I controlled the match last week, so I knew I could do it again, but he threw a couple different moves in there. I was focusing a lot on the moves he used last match, but he changed it up a lot.”

Randolph’s Jake Zachar also left Salamanca with a title under his belt, using his defensive skills to hold off Josef Bauer of Eisenhower at 220 pounds.

Zachar fell into a two-point hole after Bauer was able to gain back control for a takedown in the opening period, but he returned fire in the second with a takedown and a shot at a pin to take a 4-2 lead on the way to victory.

“He went in to a defensive stance because it basically came down to a takedown,” said Randolph coach Todd Conley. “I think you sometimes become less aggressive in that situation, which isn’t always good because you become the target. He’s been working really hard in practice and I think this being his senior year and his final opportunity he is going to try and make them most of it. He was extremely determined today.”

Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Westfield placed two wrestlers in finals to end the day, but Brendon Rowe suffered a technical fall loss to Braedon Johnson of Port Allegany at 126 while Austin Bourgeois lost via pin to Brady Worthing of Tioga at 132.

In addition to Penhollow, the Golden Falcons also placed Jordan Dustin in the finals at 170 pounds. The senior fell victim to an early margin against Josh Thibeault of Newfane, who went on to pick up an 8-1 decision victory.

Maple Grove’s best placement on the day was Kyle Trim’s second-place finish at 195. Cael Black of Eisenhower rolled through that match with a 14-3 major decision.

Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Westfield also picked up a pair of third-place medals as Martin Ohlsson won a 4-2 decision over Gianni Silvestri of Tioga in the 99-pound consolation bout. Teammate Hunter Harris pinned Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Joey Pillittieri in 3:48 at 126 pounds.

The Golden Falcons only third-place medal came courtesy of Brayden Newman, who earned a 12-8 decision over Adam Huntington of Newfane at 106.

Newman’s teammate, Jimmy Kramer, finished with a fourth-place medal, as John Wheeler of Niagara Wheatfield claimed third place at 138 pounds with a 4-1 decision.

The Golden Falcons earned four fourth-place medals from Bryce Baglia (152), John Kozlowski (182), and Collin Mower (285) while Brock Johnson grabbed fifth at 170 pounds.

Both Kozlowski and Johnson entered the day on Falconer/Cassadaga’s second team.

“Those guys wrestled extremely well against varsity competition,” said Wilcox.

Also ending the day at fourth place was Ben Szymanowski of Chautauqua Lake/Panama/Westfield at 220 pounds.
