Ingrao Sets Falconer Record En Route To STWOA Title

DUNKIRK — Falconer/Cassadaga Valley had wrestlers place in the top six in 11 of 15 weight classes to edge Niagara-Wheatfield for the Southern Tier Wrestling Officials Association Holiday Classic title on Saturday evening at Dunkirk High School.

Dylan Ingrao won the 152-pound title and in the process broke Jake Peru’s school record for victories with his 192nd for the Golden Cougars. Ingrao beat Eisenhower’s Spencer Head, 4-2, in the final.

“Spencer’s a really dangerous wrestler,” Falconer/Cassadaga Valley coach Drew Wilcox said. “I love watching him, but he stresses me out whenever our kids wrestle him because he can put you on your back at any minute.”

Robbie Penhollow was the Golden Cougars’ second champion, winning the 170-pound title with a pin in 1:01 over Canisius’ Tom Blackwell.

“Robbie moved down to 170, but Akron/Alden’s Jake Sarrow didn’t come because after-school activities were canceled,” Wilcox said. “We’re all about the best competition. Had we known they weren’t coming, we would’ve stayed at 182. We were looking forward to that matchup.”

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama’s Bryce Rowe was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler after defeating Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Dan Torres in the 160-pound final with a 6-1 decision.

“That was a great match. Dan got after it,” Wilcox said. “He took a little bit of a sloppy shot at the end. Everybody needs to lose and he’ll be better for it.”

The Golden Cougars’ other second-place finish was at 195 pounds where Maple Grove’s Zak Trim earned a 5-2 decision over Corey Keefe.

“There were a couple of things we thought of right away after the match to work on,” Wilcox said. “He got taken down a couple of times early. Corey is an emotional kid and gets extremely pumped up. Sometimes being a little less pumped up would be better for him.”

Maple Grove’s Shane Hetrick won the 120-pound title by virtue of a 6-0 decision over Newfane’s Ryan Nugent.

Randolph’s Matt Evans captured the 132-pound crown in impressive fashion with a 32-second pin of Newfane’s Nik Voelker. Evans’ track to a title included pins of 1:29 and 1:40 in addition to a 17-2 technical fall. The Cardinals’ Nick Becker took home the 285-pound title with a pin of Newfane’s Ty Casinelli in 3:30.

Fredonia’s Giovani Russo won the 138-pound championship with a 9-7 decision over Niagara-Wheatfield’s Jake DeWolf.

At 182 pounds, Southwestern’s Giuseppe Hoose earned a 10-1 major decision over Newfane’s Julian Nixon.

Maple Grove’s Luke Tomlinson (99 pounds), Southwestern’s Garret Swan (113 pounds), Fredonia’s Dalton Gardner (126 pounds), Cattaraugus-Little Valley’s Sam Grey (145 pounds) and Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama’s Ben Szymanowski (220 pounds) all lost their championship matches.
