Falconer Claims Wrestling Title At Sweet Home Duals

AMHERST -- Falconer Central School's wrestling team won the Sweet Home Duals, highlighted by three wrestlers posting 8-0 records while another finished 7-0.

In team results, Falconer defeated Frontier, 63-21; prevailed over Depew, 59-22; beat Churchville-Chili, 59-15; topped North Tonawanda, 84-6; downed Sweet Home, 70-15; downed Eden, 78-6; and knocked off Grand Island, 50-24.

The Golden Falcons' lone setback was to Iroquois, 38-36.

For Falconer, Dan Torres went 8-0 at 170 pounds, Robbie Penhollow was 8-0 at 182 pounds; Corey Keefe was 8-0 at 195 pounds. Grant Cheney was 7-0 at 220 pounds and Dillon Ingrao was 7-1 at 152 pounds..

Chase Johnson compiled a 7-1 record at 220 pounds while performing for the B Team, which had a 3-5 record.

Jason Breeden of Grand Island (160) was the Most Valuable Wrestler.

BERGEN -- Chautauqua Lake finished in third place among 21 teams with 124 points at the Byron-Bergen Wrestling Invitational on Saturday.

The Thunderbirds had three wrestlers make the finals, highlighted by Bryce Rowe claiming the 170-pound championship by virtue of a 3-0 win over Blake Wolfanger of Perry.

Brendan Ramsey (126) and Austin Bourgeois (132) also reached the final round for Chautauqua Lake, but both suffered setbacks. Ramsey was pinned by Mason Schuster of Danville in 1:48 while Bourgeois lost to Chad Coule of Byron-Bergen, 9-5.

Derek Ecklund (145) of Chautauqua Lake earned third place by a forfeit win over Preston Slugel of Albion.

Trent Barabanowski of Chautauqua Lake won his first varsity match at 99 pounds by a 10-1 win over Betty Terry from Attica-Batavia.

Pioneer won the event with 181.5 points followed by Byron-Bergen with 145 points.

Chad Toal was the lightweight outstanding wrestler for Byron-Bergen at 132 pounds and Matthew Glaser was the outstanding upperweight wrestler for Alexander at 182 pounds.
